The next Norwell? He looks hungry and ready to eat anyone in his way. I’m all for it because I feel the loss or Norwell was far more significant than many people here seemed to give credit for.

I believe the strength of the team, offensively and defensively is based on the strength of the line.

I don't see how that possible when the entire huddle has been hyperventilating about losing Norwell for months now.

Am I right in saying that it's not holding as long as he keeps his hands under the pads?

The way I understand it, extend your arms forward into the front numbers of the defender, and you are fine--reach (hook, for example) outside of that zone and you get flagged.  That is why feet are so important-it allows you to keep your hands inside as the player moves--Friendly does a great job because he moves his feet, keeps his hands inside the frame, and does not give ground (keeps his base).  He does, however, give too much of a drop for an interior lineman.  The QB does not need the pocket to collapse from the inside because it sends him back into the DE / OT traffic and makes it difficult to see blitzes--this from friends of mine who played in the NFL and on my college team.  Not trying to be a know it all, just sharing my understanding.

    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
