Thoughts on Trading Funchess?

Most wideouts of that size don’t create Antonio Brown-type separation. We can agree that’s not his strength. Julio Jones is elite in this regard—but it’s a short list.

The value prop for a 1-for-1 trade doesn’t strike me as prudent. But, you never know.

Because like KB, he can't create separation.

I wouldn't be in a rush to trade him but if the right offer came along for immediate help in the secondary I'd pull the trigger.

No way. We can get secondary help in the free agency market. It's not like any team is going to just trade away a DB with the commensurate potential that Funchess has. And I don't care if it's his last season. We need him this season.

How will we afford a secondary starter on the free agency market?

It's not like we don't have options. Releasing Jones, Silatolu, Jacobs, Byrd, Artis-Payne (and perhaps some others) may just be enough to get Kayvon Webster (or, an aged Pacman Jones[I know, not popular]). And, honestly, it may be enough to sign Eric Reid. All we have to do is trim some fat. Furthermore, I wouldn't necessarily want to do it, but Smith is sitting there at $5,000,000. None of those moves each and of themselves or together will cause great dead cap space.

Hell, we could squeeze out some money by giving injury settlements to Cockrell, Sanchez and Whitaker.

Like I said, we have options depending upon what we'd want to do.

You get rid of Funchess and Torrey Smith becomes the tallest WR at 6'0". Not that it matters as I don't Funchess is getting trading with his current contract.

yep, Bersin wouldve been our next tallest WR and hes not here anymore.

Torrey Smith - 6'0'' , DJ Moore - 6'0'' ,  Curtis Samuel - 5'11'' , Jarius Wright 5'10'' , Damiere Byrd 5'9'', if you count CMC 5'11''

Would be asinine to cut your only WR above 6'0'' with a 6'5'' QB

I would cut Torrey and use that $5m on some signings before I traded Funch

Not ready to sign off on this but it might be a viable option when cuts come around. I haven’t looked at how much we have in the cookie jar but I don’t think it’s much.

If he gets cut the coaches have the be sure that the group they have is very solid.   As much as I would like to hope I don’t feel safe after one preseason game.

Torrey Smith is the only WR on our roster that has proven in NFL games he can be a deep threat. Wouldnt like that move at all . Thats like cutting Ginn all over again and get stuck running against plenty more loaded boxes.

Like I said, I wouldn't want to do it, but if I had to to upgrade the secondary to pro form, I would. Samuel, Moore and Byrd (and even Funchess to some extent) do have the ability to get deep.  But, Smith aside, we could still trim some fat to sign Webster or Jones. Like I said somewhere, Robert McClain (though squarely Just A Guy) should come cheap, and he appears to be better than Seymour or Gunter. While you're worried about a deep threat with proven NFL experience, I'm worried about starter-level corners with real NFL experience. We look to have explosive, talented playmakers at receiver, but potential duds at CB. After last year, I'm not yet a believer.

That's what everyone keeps saying yet here we go into our third consecutive season of having a straight trash secondary while the NFL continues to evolve into a more and more pass happy league.

    • If Henderson just got a concussion and will possibly/probably now miss next week as well, gotta think missing 2 games of stats at this point of the year might knock him out as he was only just entering the discussion the last few weeks anyways.  Same goes for Judkins going down today too, and Dart's god awful game likely removes him from the conversation as well. It will be interesting to see how the voters compare T-Mac and Egbuka if they end up with stats that are nearly identical. Egbuka burst onto the scene and put up the bulk of his stats early in the year when Baker was playing like the MVP front runner.  While T-Mac was just more consistent throughout the course of the full season (ex. Egbuka has 8 games of 42 yards or less, T-Mac has 4 of them, while T-Mac still scored 3 TDs in those 4 games, where Egbuka only scored 1 TD in his 8). It would be a shame if they put too much weight on the final game of the season if that ends up being the division decider, as I think T-Mac has had the better SEASON while Egbuka had a better peak output during that first month or so but way cooled off since. Maybe Warren goes off in the last 3 games (they still play tomorrow), but it does seem to be down to T-Mac and Egbuka right now.
    • Mitchell Evan’s put a block on someone that he drove them all the way out of bounds and to the bench. He absolutely destroyed the guy. He’s gonna be a beast for us if he keeps that up.
    • Yall... stop taking a sample size and projecting a role player into a permanent starter cuz he had a decent year after what, 5? Come on
