McCaffrey doubters

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

We had a contingent of people last year who were fairly negative about the McCaffrey pick, and likewise about his ability to be a feature back in the NFL.

McCaffrey has certainly looked good this preseason. He's been used a lot, and the general expectation is that Norv Turner understands how to do that where our previous OC didn't.

Of course, as anybody who's watched football for a while knows, preseason can be deceiving.

So my question would be who among our number still doubts or questions that McCaffrey will be an effective running back this year. If so, why?

I'd also like to hear from anyone who was a doubter or a critic last year but is on board with the hype train now. What changed your mind?

There was doubt around Shula for certain, but there were also several who believed CMC wasn't gonna succeed.

The most common line of thinking I can remember is the one that he was only a slot receiver, not a running back. That one popped up a lot.

I liked the pick when it occurred, and I still do. I will admit, I am worried about how much of a beating he can take. Pending how we use him, I am curious how much toll his body can take.

If this kid is able to touch the ball 25+ times a game and still show zero wear, then I will be impressed (also very excited).

Someone his size, is better fit avoiding the hits and grinding yards.

Yeah, I never doubted McCaffrey's ability, but I did doubt he could be a featured back in an NFL offense. He came in at around 200 lbs iirc, maybe played at 205? I just didn't think he could take the pounding and honestly the jury is still out. I've been reassured by his pre-season performance, but still wonder if his body can take it. I hope so, but I also don't think he's getting 20 rushes a game. I'm willing to be wrong, of course, but I honestly can't see it.

two things: he only got 7 carries a game so people assumed he couldn’t run But Norv will put him in the I behind a fb and give him 15 to 20 carries and he will flourish like Emmitt Smith’s did behind daryljohnston

MOOOOOOOOOOSE!

sorry, I grew up a Dallas fan (there are currently 28 teams that I like better than them) Sorry, I was young and didn't know any better. I welcome any emoji turds that you see fit to react with, but Moose was a beast!

I was one. And the way he was used last year was exactly what I was afraid of. He can be effective in that role, but wasn’t worth a top 10 pick. But everything I’ve seen in preseason is encouraging. Not getting hand tackled. Running downhill. Getting 4 yards when it’s there instead of one. Doing so many things better. The only question is can he hold up, as with any rb. I said many times he would never be a bust because of his high floor. Just positional value wasn’t there.

I’m primed and ready for any crow CMC wants to serve me. But if he isn’t getting 20 touches a game, we’re doing it wrong.

Size and durability we're pretty commonly cited reasons for doubt.

    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
    • Looks like Darnold should have had at least 3 picks. That'll get ugly in the playoffs eventually. Can't deny his physical talent though. You either have that or you don't. Mike Macdonald is a legit coach.
