Lance Taylor commentary on the WRs

First of all, If we are trying to trade Funchess for something after the season most teams are going to know we aren't keeping him ourselves. Unless they are desperate to sign him most teams aren't going to give up a #1 draft choice for a player they can sign off the free agent market.

Secondly, I think he will have a good season but I don't think he will have gaudy numbers.  I think the WR group as a whole will have good numbers but if Cam spreads the ball around like he has during preseason no one player is going to have huge numbers. I wouldn't be surprised if we have 3 or 4 WR around the 700 yd mark.  Throw in 1500 to 1800 from our TEs and RB.  Cam will have about 4 to 4.5K in yardage.   Those numbers could drop as well if we are running the ball consistently.

Finally, with those numbers it will be our benefit to try and sign him at a fair value.   If other teams are going to dangle big bucks for him we have Samuel for 2 more years and Moore for 4 more years.  This puts us in a good position to negotiate a good deal for us mostly depending on whether he wants to be a Panther or move on.

I was talking about the possibility of trading Moore or Samuel, not Funchess.  Funchess will be a FA, so the only way we could trade him is if we tag him first, which I don't think we will do.  The basic question was would you keep two smaller, quick and fast receivers (whose skill sets are fairly similar) or a more balanced group of a bigger receiver with a smaller one if all three show they are worthy of starting, while also taking into consideration the cost of re-signing Funchess?

Both Moore and Samuel would definitely garner a 1st if they play well.  After all, one was a 1st round pick this year, and the other a high 2nd pick just last year, so their value will still be high and they would have proven they can play in the league...especially since both will still be early into their rookie contracts.  And they won't need to have gaudy numbers.  Teams look at much more than just stats when evaluation players.  So, if they play well within the scheme of the offense and are consistent while showing their ability as playmakers, several teams would have significant interest in them.

For the record, I'm not advocating for anything, I'm just thinking about long-term considerations.  But like I said in my earlier post, it's a next offseason question, so not really something to focus on now.

After the ridiculous OBJ contract, Funchess and the other free agent WRs will all want to get paid next season.  Samuel,, Moore, and Wright need to make us feel good about life without Funchess moving forward.

I could see Funchess demanding 25 million for a mediocre season.

Max pretty much confirms that there will be 6 and we know who they are. I don't think WR6 is as much up in the air as the RB3 spot. Personally, I'd lean towards Barner over CAP. But I'm not mad at either. But I think the 6 WRs are clear and a lock. Byrd would not survive waivers.

You have to go Barner over CAP when you realize he is better at ST, catching, and has actually shown up in preseason. Both are 28 as well.

I say this as someone who likes Funchess: If he believes Beckham's contract says anything about what he should get paid, he's delusional.

I'd like to think that Funchess knows he's not in that class.

That’s kinda why I’ve mentioned trading Funchess a couple of times. I like him and we need him, stays healthy, but wide receivers are getting Uber paid right now.

people bitch about Torrey but if Phili had cut him he would have gone and gotten 8-10 million. Impossible but a lot of receivers got a lot more than anyone would have thought this year.

Barner has earned it. He’s more versatile, runs like Sproles at times, can return, catch and most importantly he stays healthy,..

CAP is a good bulldozer at times, but that’s it, and he’s not that good at pass protection, something that this offense requires with this oline

Did anybody else see NE double covering Olsen? Expect more of those "double cover Olsen and we win" remarks from other teams fans.  :shades:  And NE's db's aren't exactly slouches either.

I'm so excited to see our wr corps become NFL professionals and their individual skills show out. All last year it felt like they were high schoolers even after the KB trade. Not fighting for position, not fighting for the ball, not coming back to Cam when he needed it, at times I wasn't even sure the right route had been run. Yeah, when Olsen was out Funchess got the double coverage but he needed to fight through it. And with Byrd and Samuel both hurt CMC was our fastest wr. What we need most is health, for all wr's to stay healthy because the skill and heart and smarts are there. So make whatever sacrifice you feel is necessary to the Football Gods. :100_Emoji_42x42:

Remember how our very own Charles "big money" Johnson contract screwed up the the market for defensive ends a few years back, well OBJ just set the WR market on fire. I'm not a fan of blowing half your cap on a WR. Draft them young and rotate them out if the price is to high.

Sammy Watkins contract did it. Once he got 15.1 million the floodgates were open. If Watkins gets 15 and Landry gets 16 of course odell was gonna get paid

For the 'cut Torrey Smith' crowd.

“Torrey had a phenomenal camp – may have had the best camp of any receiver in our group from Day One until now,” Taylor said.

"When asked about his lack of production so far, Smith noted that his preseason statistics have historically been “terrible.” Research bears that out. In his previous three preseasons, he’s recorded just three catches only to then average 30 receptions and 453 yards in the regular year. And those numbers don’t include the 13 catches he had while helping the Eagles run through the postseason en route to the Super Bowl last year."

    • Cant take him seriously because he likes Bryce sounds about right for around here
    • OK, let me first say that I can't get any Twitter link to embed--using "X" or "Twitter" or whatever, and I'm tired of trying. Now, I must say that I see Panthers stuff in Facebook on occasion as I'm part of some group, but I see Panthers stuff even less on the cesspool that is now X, but as a follower of the official Panthers Twitter, stuff pops up on that feed too. I guess that I shouldn't be surprised that agents of the organization would be putting out tweets like this: He's not even trying to be objective. It stands to make sense though. In order to get better information, you have to go to national sources like Kurt Warner.  I'm not necessarily trying to pick on J-Stew, per se, but I can't take him seriously, as even some past Panthers players, like Greg Olsen for example, don't seem like they're just trying to cater to Panthers Nation, just saying hollow words to make everyone feel good.  I just wonder why here on the Carolina Huddle, there seems to be more objectivity, or at least more critical thinking and serious discussion than most other social media sources on the Panthers. It's interesting. There is a significant difference.  For all the changes and the seeming decline in popularity to whatever degree, the Carolina Huddle still has its place and plays a big part in overall Panthers fandom. We want to be happy, joyous and cheer for the Panthers, but we aren't necessarily trying to shoot sunshine up people's derrières either.
