Analyzing the Game

Moore has been disappointing since preseason game 1 and his speeding incident that night. Manufactured a touch for him early that he did nothing with and outside of that was invisible. All WRs were bad except for Wright who was okay with 3rd down clutch catches.

Funch was fine after some early struggles and Smith was a a Lee tip away from a TD.

That said can't wait for Samuel to get back.

One thing I think needs to be kept in mind with regard to Williams:

If he's out for the season or even for a significant amount of time, that strongly increases the likelihood that at some point down the road, Matt Kalil will return to a starting role.

It may be on the left, it may be on the right, but with the general expectation being that he will be healthy again at some point, you've got to be prepared for that.

Didn't really touch on Cam Newton much. I think I'd say he didn't have his best game (as a passer anyway) but it was far from his worst game either.

Some good moments, a fair number of passes that were a little bit off, but he seemed to embrace the things that Turner has been trying to teach him. and clearly he's still effective as a runner.

Overall a good enough performance to win, and that's what matters most.

I still had the feeling they took their foot off the gas.  Had plenty of time right before half to take a shot at the end zone but instead just wasted a few seconds and settled for the FG.  Again at the end with cowboys holding 3 timeots and the 2 min warning we went conservative and gave them the ball back.

We held the Cowboys to their own side of the field for the first half. The second half we gave up a touchdown, greatly aided by some missed holding calls.

Our offense moved the ball well and we'd have had one more TD but for a fumble in the red zone. That's pretty darned good considering this is the first season with a new OC and a lot of new players on the field. We also know that letting Cam be Cam is part of the game and that should be pretty reassuring. Mobile Cam is safer because he is dictating the game. Pocket passer Cam is an easy target, and now one with less protection.

We've got a lot to feel good about and a couple of worries with Olsen and Williams. I think we'll find out way.

We beat a better team today than we want to admit, but we're one and oh. That's a good start.

We simply did not have a wr that could beat man coverage. I am sorry but I have seen this story too many times. Play good defense, get a lead, try to hold on, have the QB be your leading rusher etc.

The great news is that we won; however, the cost was high. Maybe Samuel will breathe some life into the WRs. I am not sure what the answer is for the OL......I worry that there is no good answer.

A win is a win. I just hoped the change in offensive coordinators would lead to a change in our pattern. That was not to be.  On to Atlanta.

PLEASANT SURPRISES

Game balls:  Moton, Van Roten, CMC  on offense

Add CJ Anderson  he really gave us a lift

Bradberry, Jackson, on defense (I know the front 7 deserved one, but the CBs were awesome)

Addison is a freak.  KK is a freak.  Luke is a freak.  We had great pressure on the QB.

Overall we will go as far as our defense can carry us if we can’t replace Olsen and Williams

No we would have had a FG there which still would have been a huge difference. The entire reason he fumbled was the OL whiffed and let the DL hit CMC as soon as he got the ball. No chance for a TD in any way, shape, or form on that play. Best woulda been a TFL.

We woulda had one more TD but for not even trying and letting the clock run out to end the half.

Robinson and Thomas will just have to cut it,..

also Norv will adjust and Cam will get more in tune with the receivers. He spread the ball around with Funchess wright and Torrey all getting catches and I’m sure that will increase as we go.
