Underrated decision by Rivera & props to Blackburn and ST unit

Before half we could've attempted a 50ish yard FG but instead chose to punt it. At the time I was pissed and couldn't believe it but it actually turned out to be a very good decision. The wind was apparently a big factor that day and a miss would've put the Eagles in prime territory for a FG or TD, and instead we punt and are able to down it within the 5 (props to Blackburn and the ST unit, especially after the gaffe against the Skins...) preventing the Eagles from adding to their lead which would've been huge at the end of the game. That was a very overlooked play, and maybe Rivera at times actually does know what he's doing...

I agree with this, but I also think that he is. For what could be about a hundred reasons, this defensive unit hasn't gelled to the point of creating their identity, or at least that's how it looks from the outside. In previous years, we've had a fearsome defense from the start and it stamped itself on opposing teams. This year it just didn't seem to happen.

But if you look closer, we've played some darned good teams right out of the starting gate this year. Offenses across the league are just lighting up the scoreboards in what has been a pretty much unprecedented manner. And yet, here we are, six games in with a winning record and about two plays away from being undefeated. Our defense, I think, has just withstood the storm. We're going to see them begin to dominate more in the coming weeks.

Hell I was worried when they were going to kick the FG to start.  we were down watching everyone warm up an hour before the game, on that side of the field the ball would die about 15 yards from the goalpost.  There was really bad wind on that end, as apparent with Gano's missed XP and Elliott's FG miss to start the game.

    • Gustavsson would be insane. I think we would have to break the bank to afford that move. Which, I don't think is necessarily a bad idea. Ultimately, Freddie isn't likely to be around more than a couple of seasons more. We can all agree that unless they have a fleet of sports psychologists working on Kochetkov, he will never be capable of getting his head on straight enough to compete.
    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
