I believe we will have near 68 million in cap and this coming offseason will be one of the most wide open one's in quite some time.  None of our anticipated FAs on the roster are even worth retaining minus Daryl.  We also have a young core on their rookie or fresh contracts:

Offense:

CMC

DJ Moore

Curtis Samuel

Ian Thomas

Moton

Larsen

Armah

Defense:

Donte Jackson

Short (Kind of a bad year but we've got him locked up)

Luke

Shaq

Mario Addison

Honorable mentions/unknowns:

James Bradberry (I still don't know what to think about him)

J. Carter Jr.

Efe Obada

Andre Smith

The rest of the team better strap in.  I think this D could be completely reconfigured.  This will be the clearest opportunity to do so if Rivera is gone.  There's just so much expendable talent I.E.: Horton,

We definitely need some major help in the front 7 but we've got some skilled players in tact for the next season or two (or three).

CMC- 22, DJ Moore- 21, Curtis Samuel-22, Taylor Moton- 24, Greg Van Roten- 28, Tyler Larsen- 27, Trai Turner- 25, Daryl Williams- 26, Ian Thomas- 22.

That is a full offensive line plus 2 WRs, 1 RB, and 1 TE. All of whom I feel confident can be contributors to a playoff team. Average age is 24. Larsen and Van Roten, the 1 oldest, can be replaced in draft or free agency with younger options if necessary.

Honestly, Cam at 29 years old should be able to find success on offense with these guys around him. But if the window is closed, then you trade Cam and move on. Find the next QB who fits into the timeline of these guys. Hell, Funchess is only 24 years old, so technically he fits too but is he talented enough to be a part of this group?

Donte Jackson- 23, Efe Obada- 26, James Bradberry- 25, Luke Keuchly- 27, Shaq Thompson- 24, Eric Reid- 26, Rashaun Gaulden- 23.

Obviously the defense needs the most work when talking about a window closing and needing to revamp with youth. But the secondary is fairly young still and if Gaulden can turn into a solid option next to Reid (assuming you can resign him), then you have a secondary with an average age of 24 as well. The biggest issue on defense I think is the 2 former Pro bowl DTs not living up to their billing, and the lack of edge rush. What is required in my opinion is you clean house defensively and find 5 other starters to be the new front 4 plus TD replacement, and bring in Obada as a pass rush specialist.

Realistically, this team is maybe 7 or 8 key players away from being a young, competitive roster with lots of good years ahead of them. But it starts with a new coaching staff and philosophy from the top down.

If Cam's window is closed as a competitor on the highest level, then you need to move on and get the best possible value for him, maybe a future 1st and a few 2nd or 3rds too. Draft a QB in the 1st round to be a game manager with the weapons already on the roster, and use the draft picks to invest in talented youth on the defensive side.

I agree on bradberry. He looks lost  captain is trash. Donte J is a rookie at least he makes a play on the ball   Which can’t be said for  Bradberry.    Ron won’t play Doss cause it’ll show his poor talent evaluation skills again

Reid is very good at thumping and run support we need a dam ball hawking safety to make up for mistakes. And it ain’t Adams he’s so slow it’s painful to watch

And We need A DE that brings pressure consistently. A good  Young  DT that is hungry would help also

Where are all the idiots that sat here defending every single one of Gettleman’s moves?

He is the main reason we’re in this mess. Couldn’t draft to save his life, had no idea how to go about free agency, didn’t believe in windows...

The guy was in wayyyy over his head and it was obvious to anyone with half a brain from day 1.

There is a ton of work to do this offseason and I think it’s important ownership gets on this now. We have the cap space to sign enough guys to compete next year if we choose to go that route or we could rebuild if wanted.

Things can turn around fast in the NFL. With an infusion of a forward looking coaching staff, cutting the older players and the dead weight and some smart draft picks....things can turn around quickly.

If they can free up some more cap space somehow and get  FA's that are worth a damn in needed positions....then they can be on top again.

    • Absolutely. Despite the turnovers and the terrible slips we only gave up 17. If the offense could have mustered a single productive drive after the start of the game ...
    • I think Tepper (and owners in general) have  more influence on team personnel than most of us realize. Remember how Brenton "Sunshine" Berson was a roster lock when JR owned the team?  Frank Reich didn't want to draft Bryce, Tepper did. I remember him saying in an off-season meeting that the team wouldn't have to break the bank on WR's because of BY's processing ability and his ability to distribute the a ball to like a point guard to the skill position guys. Frank quickly realized it was almost hopeless situation. And, why are we running a 3-4 defense? We ran a 4-3 for almost two decades. One year after Tepper takes over, we went to a 3-4 and continue to do so despite never drafting the appropriate personnel to run it after Rivera was fired. Owners have a lot of say on what happens on that field. Look how Al Davis tried to ruin Marcus Allen's career essentially benching him during his prime years. Canales got this job because Tepper wanted someone who could "fix" Bryce; and Canales was overly eager to get his first coaching job and felt up to the task. No top coaching prospect was going to want to come to Carolina with our track record since Tepper bought the team and having their destiny tied to Bryce as his QB. A top GM candidate from outside the organization would feel the same way. In theory, it was too early to cut bait with him after only one season Dan and Dave knew one another and both wanted to be "the guy" in charge as coach and GM. Carolina provided the ideal opportunity. On the surface this hire, if successful, could validate Tepper's decision to give a fool's ransom for Bryce and he could fill the GM spot with a body but still have someone in power that he was familiar with. In all honesty, it we had a good QB and a capable back-up on the roster I doubt we'd be having this conversation because we'd probably be one of the top teams in the NFC.
    • Just reeks of bullshit. Good college QB but when you were watching him as an NFL prospect the physical limitations and playing style concerns were very obvious. Teams across the league almost certainly evaluated him as a backup QB prospect and the last thing you want out of a backup QB is a distraction. Strip away the media hype job, add in all the reports that Shedeur essentially completely blew off the pre-draft process and turned teams off essentially cementing what many already thought and nothing about his draft plummet was surprising. Watch the Browns draft room as the pick was announced. It's very obvious that wasn't their pick. The owner stepped on and said get me that press attention. Why would that have happened if there was a directive from the league not to draft him? It just doesn't pass the bullshit litmus test.
