Is Cams shoulder as bad as we thought?

I said it elsewhere: you have to notice the cumulative effect.

People see him throwing bullets in the opening drive and think everything is fine, and at that time it probably is. But by the time you get to the third or fourth quarter, the wear and tear is taking its toll.

That's why you can see Newton firing on all cylinders to open the game and looking like he can't even complete a simple pass by game's end.

Honestly 30-40 throws, once a week, shouldn’t have that much difference from beginning to end. He’s an NFL QB. His arm should be in peak strength. Pitchers throw 100 + times every 5 days and don’t lose velocity on their fast balls. Different sports yes, but both throwers.

If you're healthy.

I don't believe Newton is.

Last play of the first half from midfield last Sunday.

Who was the QB? Taylor Heinicke to make the downfield throw. And, no, it wasn't so Cam could get into the locker room a few seconds earlier. He stood on the sidelines and watched Heinicke make the throw (which didn't get there, btw).

So why are coaches throwing it so much more? I can’t believe we just went away from the run game if that’s the case.

No idea, but if his arm was fine, Heineken wouldn't be put in to throw the deep ones, right?  RR is trying to save his job and knows if he IR's Cam, he's done.  Cam, hurt or not, is RR's only chance of keeping his job here.

cam's throwing more because the defense is trash and rivera's trying to either save his job or set himself up for his next job. he will find no shortage of teams willing to nod along as he blames cam for his failures.

the shoulder probably isn't 100% but it's clear from watching the games that the performance of the offensive line has had more to do with the ineffectiveness of the deep ball this year. lots of falling backwards/getting hit/stepping to the side on his deep attempts. that coupled with a small sample size makes much of the hand wringing over cam's deep ball pointless. we can't properly evaluate the health of his shoulder and its impact on his passing ability when any other quarterback would be throwing ducks in this context. he can't consistently step into his throws. he's made some insane velocity-dependent throws this year.

one thought i've seen that i could agree with is that his shoulder gets weaker or more sore as the game progresses.

The O line has been an issue, but IMO there is more to it than that.

Why not stack the box?  Why not at least try to take CMC out of the game?

With a normal Cam arm, that's much harder to do consistently, especially now that we have some legit speed on the offensive side of the ball.

At the end of the day, Cam's throws outside the hash marks look pretty damn bad right now.

We are scheming almost zero downfield throws right now.  No team is going to respect it until they think Cam can make those throws again...at best, that's next season.

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
