Matt Kalil seems far more like a Richardson signing than a Gettleman.  Family connection etc...

Regardless, it clearly didn't work out.

I'm tired of this excuse being made for DG. He couldn't sign players to big contracts because we didn't have space. We finally had money in 2017 and his true color was revealed. Terrible contracts to Kalil, Munnerlyn, and Shepard.

He might be a better fit at right tackle but he is a much, much, much, much better fit at LT than Matt Kalil and Chris Clark.

I will give that there may not have been mutual interest in Whitworth. We don't know if either we or he had any and we will likely never know. I suppose it doesn't really matter at this point. Hearing either scenario wouldn't remove Matt Kalil's bloated contract.

I 100% agree.  Frankly, imo I think move moton to left, William's stay right and we will have decent tackles.

I would keep both, regardless of who is playing where. I don't think that will happen though. Williams carries great risk with the injury and the market for OT's is pretty insane. He might command a $12-15 million/year kind of price. I suspect he ends up signing elsewhere, as much as I would hate to see it.

Gettleman had been around just 3-4 years and had hundreds of players to choose from.

He chose 2 ex-panthers (Peppers and Munnerlyn) and 1 Panther brother (Kalil).  Does that not seem strange to anyone?  Does that not suggest he may have had some limits in the players he could pursue or was perhaps told who to look at?  Does the fact he was then fired and TD/Olsen immediately got new contracts not suggest something?

It seems obvious someone wanted the gang back together again.  I think Gettleman went along with it until he could no longer.

This is called common sense...issue with it however, it's not as common as it should be.

People need to quit with the jr forced dg to sign Matt bs, dude just back up the brinks truck for solder this offseason, same move different team, horrible horrible move that set us back

This is a great point. He has a real penchant for spending tons of money on shitty "hog mollies".

I'm not mad at Matt Kalil. I'm mad at Dave Gettleman. Especially after seeing Andrew Whitworth killing it for the Rams. Dave made some terrible long term gambles that have hobbled this team. If someone were to pay me all of that money, I'd take it too.

I think JR was the wizard behind this deal...trying to keep big brother happy. I'm sure Dave went with the program and did what the owner wanted.

Good moves by Gettleman were because he was genius. Bad moves were because JR would at times cast a spell on him and control his every move.

Bad moves are bad moves, and DG has his share.  Just the same as good ones.

Butler over Henry...didn't like it.  3 corners in a draft...nope.  Signing Turner over Norwell....bad move again.  They all have them.

However, something smells to the high heavens about Captain and Matt Kalil.

I'd say Dave's bad outweighed his good.

You can, but I won't.

Signing Cam to a "team friendly" deal was huge.  Drafting and/or bringing in Moton, Oher, Norwell, Turner, Williams, etc...was fantastic.  Fixed the DT problem that had been killing us for years, while finding a way to field an offense that took us to a 15-1 season, and a trip to the big game.

He wasn't perfect, but outside of the very strange (see absurd) contracts to Kalil and Captain, did very little to put us in a hole long term.

    • Yes, it tells me they’ve improved significantly from sitting at what, 30-31st in the league on the PP to 11th now.
    • I wanted someone to hire him so we got the picks, but I'm also not upset that he'll now be back. I genuinely don't understand why so many fans on here dislike him so much.  No, he's not perfect and made some mistakes this year, especially at the end of the playoff game and going so soft in coverage on the final drive. But considering this place torched him all offseason for us having the "worst defense in NFL history" last year.  Said in the whole pre-draft process how we had to go defense in round 1 because of it and then complained the rest of the offseason that we didn't do enough to improve the defensive roster. How do people say all that about the defense and then complain when he turned that same unit into a pretty respectable defense this year.  They were really the only reason we were in a lot of games for most of the season, as the middle part of the season they really stepped up and were playing like one of the better defenses in the league. I don't see any reason we can't improve even more next year if we spend another offseason focusing on adding pieces on that side of the ball, which we should be able to do with our draft picks and cap space.
