What about the last 3 years?

While you’re telling me how I feel about Shaq(what do my expectations have to do. With his overall play)? We drafted him to be a coverage LB. He is not. Not on TEs or RBs. Show me where he is worth 9.6M in today’s market? Because that is all I said, and I don’t consider him a bust either. And never have. So attacking me and avoiding the issues is way off base here.

Attacking you?  Dude.  Where did you hear he was drafted to be a coverage LB?   There's actually no such thing by the way.  Ron chose to use him in his Joker package.  And even Ron said he would need at least 500 snaps to come into his own.    Since then he's been limited to whatever role each of the 3 different DC's coverage packages were.  He can cover a TE and RB very well but not a WR, not even Luke can do that consistently.  He will get that 9 mil, if not here somewhere else.

This points to kind of an important distinction people need to understand on these things.

Placing someone on injured reserve is not a medical decision. It's a football decision. That's why somebody who's hurt a lot worse can be kept on the roster over somebody whose iinjury is relatively minor.

This time of year, pretty much everybody's got something hurting. Injured reserve becomes a primary tool for roster management.

Telling me it’s my fault because I don’t know his “real” plays as opposed to all the ones that are the coaches fault.

I remember the “Buffalo Nickel”. And that being the reason he was picked. What do you think a Joker/Hybrid S/LB is there for? Pass rush? Run game? And all his DCs used him wrong? All of them?

I don’t care if he gets it anywhere. We have too many needs to overpay an OLB. You act like I hate him and think he’s a bust. Just not the player we need at that price. But continue to ovrrreact or find someone who GAS. I’m sure many will call him a bust today. Again. Go find one of them. I stated an opinion with a sound basis that you have done nothing to dispute except make excuses. Give him almost 10M and HOPE the next DC uses him in the right way.

This obviously means more to you than it does to me so I concede this one to you.   I will say this though, he's the best LB on the team not named Luke Keukly.  If that's not worth keeping then I don't know who is.

That's an opinion, not a fact. Maybe he is, but for $9M, I'd be willing to bet the Panthers could get a better LB and still have money to spend elsewhere. That's the crux of the argument. If Shaq were returning for a lesser amount, reflective of his contribution (say, $5M or so), I'd be more inclined to bring him back.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
