Davis hints at playing elsewhere

Mr. Scot

He’s become a legendary Panther with his toughness and tenacity, and it’s almost unfathomable to think of him playing for another NFL team.

But he obviously wouldn’t be the first aging legend to leave the only team he’s ever known to wrap up a career – if it came to that.

“Man, I only want to wear these colors. I’ve expressed that over and over,” Davis said, “but at the same time, you know I don’t want to be put into a situation where I’m forced to walk away too early. We’ll see what happens.”

Tons of legendary players end up finishing their careers elsewhere than where they made their mark. It may happen with TD. But honestly, I'd rather let Shaq and his $10M cap hit walk and give TD another year. TD has lost a step, but he's still a better LB than Shaq and Shaq isn't worth anywhere near his next year's cap hit.

One thing we have to be clear on: The Panthers are not in business to help their players have happy endings to their careers.

They are in business to win games. Nothing else is even close to that level of importance.

The best organizations let players go before they hit the wall, not after.

I realize this is something a lot of Panther fans might have to get used to, but if they start doing business "the Steeler way", this is going to be commonplace.

He would be the smallest hole to plug.

We have bigger problems.

This is my biggest problem with the thought of letting him go. I don’t really feel that is the truth.

i think TD has lost a step, but he hasn’t lost his smarts and cohesion with Luke. I think you are underestimating his value here.

right now we don’t see LB as a “hole” because we are petty good there right now. But we are one Luke K injury or TD retirement away from a major hole in what has been a league leading stronghold for years. I think LB needs to be addressed, but don’t assume we can just put anyone there and not be a hole there. We were mighty at the D line until this season. What happened? Lost a bit of cohesion, lost a guy, gained a guy, lost the effectiveness that defined 2013 and 2015.

Lost jNo and gained what 3 rookies and ended up with a massive hole in the secondary.

i think what makes successful teams successful is cohesion on the player level. It’s a fragile thing and of course you can’t keep everyone forever, but at the same time I’m wary with the idea of sending TD down the road just thinking it will only be a little hole.
