$26M To Fill Out Half A Roster

The Panthers released the full list of their free agents and they are going to have to make a lot of changes without a lot of money.

UFA’s: Artis-Payne, Whittaker, Barner, Cadet, Funchess, Williams, Clark, Newhouse, Kalil (retiring), Silatolu, Peppers, Horton, Love, Davis, Mayo, Jacobs, Reid, Adams, Jones, and Catanzaro

RFA’s: Heinicke, Byrd, Manhertz, and Norris

ERFA’s: Hood, Obada, Cox Jr., and Parms

Now you have $26M in cap space and 8 draft picks to fill around 20 roster spots.

You can open up more space by cutting Thompson ($9.2M), Addison ($7.3M), Smith ($5M), Searcy ($2.9M), Poe ($2.7M), Cockrell ($2.4M), Munnerlyn ($2M), Doss ($805K), and (Seymour ($720K).

Just remember, for every player you cut, you have to replace.

Note: Kalil is not included because if he is cut he will be a post June 1st cut, his $7M cap savings can only be used for draft picks and in-season signings.

You are Marty Hurney, what do you do?

And yes, the Marty Hurney who was fired for his cap management is going to have to pull a rabbit out of his ass this offseason.

The same thing we do every night, Pinky...

Give horrendous contract extensions/restructures to overaged vets and underpeforming players that will cap-strap us for decades and let the next GM worry about it!

Good post.

Add Olson as a post June 1st cut and we save close to 3 million.

The only reason I didn’t add him was because of how post June 1st money can be used, but if you add him with Kalil theoretically we could spend to the cap and use the $10M on the draft class and minor roster tweaks throughout the year.

Smith, Searcy, Poe SHOULD be gone

Shaq should be extended which should spread out and lower the number

If you are Shaq do you sign an extension? Because of his average play I’m guessing the offer he gets may not be the one he wants.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he bet on himself. It could always backfire though (i.e. Daryl Williams).

Same with Bradberry.

I feel like Addison is the only one that may get his actual value in an extension.

It's really not too hard. Pay Shaq and Addison cut the rest. The post cut will pay for the draft picks. All those UFA's are free to go besides Mayo and Jacobs, try and keep reid. Cut Gano and keep catanzaro, he proved himself worthy. Williams should be resigned. However, Shaq wasn't even top 3 in tackles. Our secondary was behind Luke, not Shaq. I still think there's too much of a fall off so we can probably get him to restructure and if he goes out and proves himself, then he get paid by us or someone else.

This is an obese team that needs to straight up burn the fat and not trim it. This is a lot of fat (Poe). Get them all out and go young. We still need a pro bowl caliber corner, someone like Tillman to show these young players how to cover. If we lose Davis and Shaq that's too much at LB and Luke will be singled out all the time.

Unfortunately, Hurney's history suggests contract rewrites lowering the cap hit temporarily, and for a GM who might not necessarily be too secure going forward I don't see much incentive for him to change his MO and actually focus on the future consequences.

I hope he'll cut several big money small performance guys and us be done with it.  All we can do is hope.

This is my concern, particularly with Short. Marty is gonna be hugely tempted to kick the can down the road with that contract and it'll cripple us.

    • I'm not a huge fan of BY, but he does have some clutchness developing
    • While you're correct, people are just sick of being told, "you don't understand this, you're dumb" despite what their eyes say. This applies to the Panthers and anything else in life. This board can be a miserable place, but this isn't the old days anymore because Social Media & Reddit have hijacked old-school forum users.  I have in the last year or so taken a massive step back from Social Media & Reddit. Deleted accounts on both, I only have X/Twitter now. But I was looking for an outlet for Panthers talk and I did not want to do that on X much at all. There are only two legitimate outlets for that I've found, here and SB Nation. SB Nation I used to partake in, but they absolutely bumble-f*cked the comments section, and I like the setup of the posts + comments, as opposed to article + comments. Also, as others have pointed out, being a Panthers fan has been a horrendous existence since Cam left. Just an awful crew of coaches, draft picks, trading away great players, etc. It's been miserable.  Ever since Tepper bought the team, I hoped that he commit to a full rebuild. He never did, he thought there were shortcuts and so did Rhule. This hamstrung us for years, and then he massively overstepped with the BY trade.  This ruined the team building, because there was no depth, and then it ruined nuanced BY discussions because of the insane haul we gave up. He will never live up to that, I think many people are finally wrapping their heads around that now which is good. The best thing for this board to get better is for the Panthers to win more, draft well, and to stay committed to crawling through this Andy Dufrense poop-pipe to escape the depths of NFL hell. It will be ugly and stink along the way, but you can see already this year if we commit to drafting then the team and the vibes can turn around quicker than you think.  I am extremely optimistic about the draft class this season, it's something to watch, talk about, and celebrate. It also gives Dan and I think by extension Dave Canales more of a leash, which I think we need to give them and grant them the time to turn this boat around.
