Rodrigue says Rivera will be coach and DC next year

I hope anyone that has believed that any high-value players on offense will either be drafted or signed as FAs knows what this means... that everything of value in this offseason will yet again be dedicated to defense.  Ron will gladly feed his QB to the wolves but one thing he will NEVER do is allow his defense to fail, especially when it will specifically be HIS defense.

We're not even sure who's playing QB next year.

I don't hate Rivera - he's a solid coach. I just think we've seen what he can do here and it's time to go a different direction.

2019 won't be a lame duck year and I didn't say anything about firing him after a playoff run. He's under contract through 2020, so he would have one more year under his current contract to coach after a 2019 playoff run. That's the point of my questions - what is the argument for extending him beyond 2020 following the 2019 season instead of seeing how things play out in 2020?

Yeah, I agree that he might not get an extension due to his inconsistency. Usually coaches that are doing well don’t go into the last year of there contract with things up in the air, but I wouldn’t blame Tepper if he didn’t want to extend him.

Nobody cares about that. We want Rivera gone

Want to do like the Cardinals and replace him with a fired College Head Coach? The market is bare and Rivera is one of the best DC's in the game. The fact that the defense improved as soon as he took over play calling duties should be enough to save him his job. If it weren't for the defense this season we would be in the playoffs.

I am coming to terms with RR here next year, gaglfaph, sorry I threw up in my mouth a little bit.

...Making RR in charge of the D is smartest thing RR has done in the last 3 years...even if it was under duress.  This secondary coach we brought in better eliminate those chunk plays that were killing us all season.  Now if Washington focused on the DLine again... I wouldn't have worries about coaching on D.

We need to let go of Adams, unfortunately, and Gaulden is practice squad material.   We have to do something about safety and DE in off season.

Now about that red zone offense.....

FFS, bench Cam, draft a QB to get time, and cut all the overpriced veterans. it's time to rebuild and have something in place for when both Ron and Hurney's contract run out. Tepper is JR 2.0 no doubt and i'm close to being done until they prove they care about winning.

Reminds me of the meeting Fox and Hurney had with Richardson after 2007. It was basically a "make the playoffs next year or you're both gone" meeting. We did make the playoffs, but it ended in the most infamous game in Panthers history. And we followed that loss with 2 miserable seasons until Fox was finally canned. This reminds me too much of the past. I feel like we will make the playoffs next year, but at this rate nothing makes me think we will sustain success.

    • As I've said numerous times the last few days, having Thielen on the field has literally 0% to do with my views on this (I've even said I think Renfrow is going to take a ton of snaps from Thielen anyways).  He has more value to this team without playing a single snap than a 2026 5th round draft pick does for the franchise.   His value is helping set up T-Mac, XL, Coker, and Horn for long term success by helping them learn how to be pros, how to go about their business, how to train, how to do all the little things that helped turn Thielen from a D2 undrafted player into a borderline Vikings legend.
    • He only wants to be traded because it's the Vikings who are calling. If he didn't want to be here, he could have retired, instead he took a pay raise to come back for another season.  I get it, it's an opportunity that he'd like to take, but we shouldn't cut off our nose to spite our face because he now wants to jump at this opportunity less than two weeks before the season starts. I'm not against trading him, I'm just against trading him for a return that doesn't help our team as much as having him on the roster would.  I'll put it this way, if a 5th is the best we can get for him from the Vikings and he's now dug in on not wanting to stay this year, I'm saying screw you and trading him to any of the other 30 teams besides the Vikings for the best offer we can get. He was perfectly happy here a week ago, if the Vikings soured him on that and then want to get him for peanuts, then screw them both.
    • Yes and no, he wants to go back and his wife most definitely wants to go back. He took a bunch of team mates to Minny and has worked out with JJ two offseasons in a row. It's where both him and his wife are from.    The money was basically a please come back and help Bryce. Pretty please...here's some more money.    Now he's agreed to a paycut to go back to the Vikings.
