Jason Witten "unretiring"

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Love Greg and will miss him if he does bounce, but like @LinvilleGorge said...might be what's best for all involved.  Let Ian grow, let Cam spread the ball to the young guys, and force Rivera out of his comfort zone.  Love Greg to death, but he's a high cap number for mediocre performance at this point.

Plus, will be nice hearing his take on MNF when we play

Will it though? If ESPN hires someone else that they wind up liking who is much better than Witten was, then there are no top network spots available and might not be for several years.

This. There's a job on the mic for Olsen when he retires, but it might not be THAT job. If Greg wants the MNF gig and he's holding an offer, he better jump on it. They're gonna fill that seat with someone this season and if that someone does a good job of doubt they'd want to make changes to the booth in recurring seasons.

Mine was the opposite. Nice, Greg is retiring. Love Greg, but I think he's done as an effective NFL player but I know Rivera would play him over the much younger and at this point more effective Ian Thomas as long as Olsen's foot was held together by that duct tape and bailing wire.

Ron mentioned today he would love to use both Greg and Ian similar to when he had Greg and Shockey but that Ian still needs a lot of "seasoning".

I wouldn't say Ian is more effective on the field than Greg at this point. More athletic? Sure, but there is a lot more that goes into playing that position than catching and running and Ian is still very raw.

I'd love to see that, but I have my doubts it'd happen. Greg has forgotten more about playing the TE position than Ian Thomas knows at this point, but it doesn't matter. There's just too wide of a physical gulf at this point between the two of them.  Yes, Thomas requires handholding and Greg doesn't, but that's why coaches get paid. Any decent coach would look brilliant if he could field a team of nothing but seasoned veteran All-Pros.

You've touched on a common fallacy on this board. Specifically, that "athletic" equals "good".

A guy can be a phenomenal athlete without being a great football player. Michael Vick and Tim T-bow are prime examples, as is Colin Kaepernick (you see this fallacy a lot when he's being discussed on here).

Heck, every player that makes it to the NFL is a world class athlete, but it takes way more than that to succeed at the pro level.

My bet is that ESPN will not replace Witten and will move forward with a two-man "Monday Night Football" booth with Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland.

10:26 AM - 28 Feb 2019

Unless the Panthers are on I don't watch that BS anyway.

Tessitore reminds me too much of ESPN FNF hes too monotone for football. & Booger is a clown.

QBs make good analysts, and as much as I hate the Cowboys, Aikman and Romo are pretty good when compared to others.  Don Meredith, Dan Fouts, Joe Theismann,  Dilfer, Esiason,  Marino, etc.  have been given jobs as an analyst or color commentator.

The Point has arrived:  With the golden boys Brees, Brady, Manning, Rodgers,  etc. about to retire in the next 2-3 years, I would think the booth would get crowded.
