Albert Breer: Panthers selecting QB in 2nd/3rd round

Newton has two years left on his current deal—he’s due $16.7 million this year, and $19.1 million next year, and is up just as the collective bargaining agreement expires in 2021. So from his standpoint, waiting (and even forcing the team to tag him in two years) might make sense. And I’m sure the team would like to see how his shoulder heals, after this offseason’s surgery.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Panthers draft a quarterback in the second or third round—maybe someone like West Virginia’s Will Grier or Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham. That would give them a nice, affordable insurance policy behind Newton, with the potential that the insurance policy grows into something more.

It's a smart move to have good insurance behind Newton, QB last year had issues making it through a game fully healthy. That's not something you put to chance with Cam's shoulder being what it is. You're not just gonna draft a late round prospect because that's what's currently on the roster behind Cam. Your gonna use an early pick to get a QB if you do it at all.

If we are that desperate to "be sure" about the QB position despite any other needs, and having a 100 million dollar QB on the books, why not just go all in and get the best available in the first round?

This discussion is all sunshine and rainbows in April, but if our defense is looking shaky come November, this place will be flooded with rage posts from some of the very same fans who pushed to draft a QB in the first place. Anyone who has been around this fanbase long enough knows this song and dance by now.

I'm with you on that, since I said almost the same thing a couple of days ago.  If they want to draft Cam's replacement. because of shoulder or money, then they should draft high no matter what others think a guys draft round "should" be.  Grier won't be there at #100 but Stidham should be.

It’s all about value. If Grier is a lottery player than he is most certainly worth our second third pick or 4th pick. I am not buying the Panthers will spend a second rounder on him. I am torn either way on the first 3rd round pick but really have no problem with it.

Very unlikely you take any player in the 3rd/4th round, especially at our need positions, and have him come in be the difference.

Having Grier and a high pick QB on next years draft competing for the position is not a bad thing. Just because next seasons class is better a franchise QB isn’t as simple as just picking up one and being good to go. And Grier May just turn out to be a quality back up. Which works well whether Cam works out or not.

This is all entertaining the idea Cam isn’t going to make it of course which no one knows. From Rivera’s statements he seems to want to ‘develop young QBs’ which to me sounds like Allen. As I said this Grier talk is more about his value, if he’s there later than expected, no reason not to take him.

    • Give me Anthony Hill Jr or give me death
    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
