Well, I feel much better about the Burns pick now

With the Christian Miller selection, there is NO DOUBT in my mind now that we'll be running a vast majority of our defensive sets from the Base 3-4.

Both Burns and Miller fit perfectly into that defensive set and both have a very good chance to be impact players in it.

Still bummed about the 2nd and 3rd rounds though.

P.S. If we end up running the majority of our defensive sets from the Base 4-3 defense, then my thoughts on the Burns/Miller picks are the exact opposite.  As dumb as I think Rivera is, even I don't think Rivera could be *that* dumb.

P.S.S. Could he?  SCARY.

Yea it's a double dip that makes sense, fills need, and the players aren't bad so this could actually be Hurney's draft that shows he isn't a moron and it was JR fuging everything up for sure. Especially if the players from the last draft pan out like they have so far.

Rivera might be a potato on gameday and far to loyal to his coaches (see shula and Washington), but the guy really knows defense.

On defense we've picked two really good players that didn't "match up" with traditional expectations of the DE position in a 4-3 or who may be a little too large for a 3--4. That devalued both candidates, in my opinion, because they didn't fit traditional molds/schemes.

It makes me think we're going to see something really different from the Panthers this season. Considering the offensive firepower of our division, the ability of a defense to morph instantaneously from a 4-3 to a 3-4 (not just for a season, but even from play to play) could shake up some game plans. It's going to take some aggressive play calling on our part and incredible on field leadership.

It might also take a season or two to iron the bugs out...

On offense, we needed the help at LT because I'm not sure that Moton wasn't a better RT than Williams was before him, before the injury. Imagine if we locked down a great LT in the draft and just basically lucked into a great RT with Moton.

And QB, we need a good back up QB who could step in and play to win in a pinch. I think we got him. He's not franchise, but he's like having a full-sized spare in the trunk --  if something does go wrong, we might just be able to finish the journey rather than relying on some half-sized, get-you-off-the-interstate donut. That also explains why Marty didn't go after Gilbert once the AAF folded.

From here, I still hope to see another O-lineman and some secondary help snagged.

But I think Marty is putting together a very interesting draft, maybe one of his best.

People when I said we would go after OLB's. These are the most important pieces in a 3-4 defense. We got 2 athletes who can get after the QB and also drop into coverage. I love the draft just wish we could have got our starting FS with the 3rd round pick. Other than that Hurney has nailed this draft imo. Cant  wait to see Burns and Miller develop with Luke/Shaq.

*Also people forgetting we still have Addison and Irvin. Our depth is real!

3-3-5 is the more likely common formation. But pretty much alludes to a conceptual change of how our defense will work.

I'm assuming then, of the middle 3, that one of the MLB will be replaced with a cornerback?  Because I don't think we have near the quality and quantity of safeties needed to sub in a safety.

When he took over the play calling for the defense you could see a vast improvement.  (a little too late) Switching 3-4 and 4-3 causes offenses problems with execution.

We don't have to go to one or the other.  I like the fact that we are getting players that can play multiple positions.

Rivera will either go out in a flame or end up an innovator of NFL defenses.   His name could be mentioned  in the same breathe as Jimmy Johnson, Buddy Ryan and Dick LeBeau.

I don't for even a second think that Ron Rivera is truly capable of changing at this point of his career.

I know all about the 3/4 in SD and the 4/3 everywhere else, but he was forced to use the 34 in SD due to players on the roster.

If he can truly be dynamic, and change his philosophies, then the Burns pick, and this one make sense....I just have a very bad feeling that in the end, the vast majority of snaps that Burns plays will be hand in the dirt 43 DE.

Let's hope I'm really really wrong.

    • SMH. We have one 5-12 season and no playoffs under our belt. Gettleman was here for 5 off-seasons with Rivera. The team went to the playoffs 4 of 5 years, were in a SB and had a 51-28 record. Do I think DG was amazing? No, he made a ton of mistakes but acting like Morgan is amazing is ridiculous, even for your rose colored glasses. It’s hard to really praise Gettleman but we didn’t have a single season as bad as last year under him. One 5-12 season is not a king maker. Let’s get 1 winning record before declaring the GOAT GM. I’d love nothing better to call Dan Morgan the greatest GM ever but he basically needs 4 straight 11 win seasons to match the 51 wins in 5 years under Gettleman and Ron.
    • No, Getelmen should be launched into the sun for doing nothing to keep Grose or making any effort at all to replace him..it was his insistence that our o line was fine that got Cam hit way to many times and shortened his career....who knows how long he could have played with half decent protection....and let's not forget the receivers he drafted...funches and Benjamin...one of those guys lazy rout running led to Cams first serious sholder injury
