Hard to make too much of last year when the whole DLine regressed.  Washington focusing on the line this year should give us a better performance and more pressure. Short had an off year in 2018 but who didn't.

This

I think this needs to be stated more

Everyone was ready to run Washington out of town last year.  The guy just isnt a good playcaller and no where near ready to be a DC.  But a Dam good DL coach.  Once he went to DC and not focusing on coaching up the DL and Hoke came in.  Its no coincidence how they took a Major step back

It's not just about sacks either. The guy was getting completely washed put of the play routinely by single blockers. He was a JAG all the way around.

Dude, Luke was just a JAG for the majority of last year too. He was trying to do too much, overcompensating for a poor defensive plan, and putting himself out of position way more than he ever did than last year.

If this crap happens again this year, I'll look at it as a trend. As of now, it's an anomaly to me.

Washed out?

As in he still was getting into the backfield and more TFL than the Cox's who are getting paid more than him?

A lot of these other guys dont have a Luke either.  That is a heat seeking missle shooting through and gobbling up those TFL's which KK taking on those blockers and letting Luke get through untouched.  Doesnt get the credit that is due

Washed out as in leaving a massive hole for a runner to run through. A big part of a DT's job in the running game is to simply occupy blockers to allow the LBs to make tackles. KK looked like he was playing on roller skates much of the time last year.

He still finished

#3 overall in the league in TFL last year

And was the only LB in the top 15 in that category last year.

Still givemost of last years blame to.

1. Poe, he came into fill Stars shoes and was pushed around in single team blocks.  He made Atlanta fans laugh and tell us told you so (they did warn us when we signed him)

2. Edge rushers.  We were relying on Obada as our #2 edge rusher, and Addison as our #1.  Addison is solid but he wouldnt be the any other teams #1 rusher.  There is no coincidence that we hit this category hard and heavy this offseason with Burns, Miller, and Irvin

And he did

Luke wasnt #3 in the whole NFL in TFL last year with no help.

He wasnt the only LB in the top 15 in that category if KK was getting washed out

Listen, I figured a lot of K's struggles last year were due to Star's absence, new DC, sorry DE play, etc. Until I went back and started watching some games focusing on him. He was getting straight manhandled over and over by single blockers. That's not about anything but him. He looked like poo out there.

No. He didn't. Go back and watch.

I did go back and watch

KK is number 99

Not #95, which was Poe, who was getting pushed around.

Just like Atlanta fans warned us last offseason when we signed him.  After they didn't even attempt to retain him

Sorry man, he's had two back to back dud seasons. One more and he's a cap casualty. He has 5 sacks in the last two seasons combined while being paid like an elite pass rushing three technique. Time for him to start playing like it or time for us to free up a bunch of cap space and find someone else.

He's had 10.5 sacks in the last two seasons combined. How many DTs are consistently putting out 10+ sack seasons aside from Aaron Donald? Geno Atkins is the closest that I can think of.

Compared to the other top 5 paid DTs, KK's stats over the last 2 seasons:

GP: 30 (3rd-t) [1st - Atkins - 32]
TOT: 91 (3rd-t) [1st - Casey - 122]
    SOLO: 56 (3rd) [1st - Casey - 77]
    AST: 35 (3rd) [1st - Casey - 45]
SACK: 10.5 (5th) [1st - Donald - 31.5]
FF: 3 (2nd-t) [1st - Donald - 9]
PD: 2 (2nd-t)[1st - Cox - 3]
STF: 15 (2nd-t) [1st - Donald - 15]

Short is the 3rd best paid player of that group, which when you compare them side-by-side looks about right. I'm not seeing the reasoning behind the "produce or get cut" sentiment that some are sharing. He had an insanely good 2015, but has been solidly consistent otherwise.

Didn't KK also have an ankle issue that started early on in the season? That likely also never went away, especially when 300+ pounds are using it to springboard into another 300+ pounds.

I think people are severely overstating KK's demise.  Casual fans get caught up in just total sack numbers, when in reality sacks can be random.  You have to look at pressures and win rates and also his run D.  Also you have to compare that success to the rest of the league to really get an idea of his performance.

For example casual fan says "he only beat his man 10% of the time he must be terrible".  In reality the average DT only beats his man 8% of the time so in reality he played well.

You can't judge a player by just watching him, you have to have a benchmark to compare to.  That is what makes the PFF scoring system so good.  I'm not saying his play wasn't down somewhat last year but he is far from a JAG.
