We have almost $10 million in dead cap, sadly Matt Kalil still accounts for that much dead cap space alone in 2020.

For what, we already let McCoy walk. If he was signing here we shouldn't have let him leave. Don't give me we had to wait on Kalil's money because we could have made it official without that.

As much as I would like having McCoy here, if he does sign elsewhere, banking nearly $20 million in rollover cap space alone is a nice consolation price.  It will give Marty some breathing room to work on some deals next year.  Cutting Poe ( next year) will give us the $10 million in cap space back from Kalil dead cap money.

So we should hold him prisoner even though he said he wanted to go home think about the three desks and make a good decision with his family helping him. How again were we supposed to not let him leave?

Dumping Short doesn't free up enough money to really make much sense. You definitely cannot replace him for the $2 mil in cap space it frees up. I doubt you see Short get cut but Poe is a real possibility if he does not play much better than last year.

Has everyone forgotten that McCoy is 31?  There are only 8 DT's in the league older than 30.  Look, McCoy has been great, no argument.  But he is 100% at the point in his career where production is going to start falling off.

I would love to have him on a deal that is friendly.  Sure.  But investing significant dollars for an aging career 4-3 DT who would be learning a brand new position in a brand new system and then expecting the same level of production?  Seems like a stretch.

I have thought of this as well with his age. But if you look across the NFL, pass rushers are clearly at a premium. This isn't an ideal situation for the Panthers, but we haven't had a legit game taking over pass rusher since Greg Hardy left. I love me some Peppers, but at the tail end of his career there was only so much he could do for us before he retired. We need as much pass rush as we can get, and clearly we are willing to spend for it. That's the NFL right now, and it isn't looking to change anytime soon after the Patriots shut down the Rams the way they did in the most recent Super Bowl.

We need pass rush and McCoy is elite even at 31.  That being said you can not do a long-term contract that will make you cap poor.  It has to be somewhat flexible even though you are going to pay a premium.  

 

i dont think he’s in a hurry to sign though.  If I were him I would take my time.

I don't think anyone expects a 5 year deal or anything.  But a 3 year deal, that can be ended after 2 with low dead cap.  That is feasible.  And I definitely think McCoy would be worth it for 2-3 more years.

McCoy wasn't going to sign while here. That was known before he made the visit. His agent said earlier in the week that he was taking the weekend to make up his mind and would sign on Monday or Tuesday.
