Charlotte Observer is losing both of its Carolina Panthers beat writers

Media coverage is changing in a big way around here. If the Panthers could flick a switch and have its own in house Media group be the exclusive provider they would, and each year they move closer to that.

Bad news for journalism but not surprising.

Not sure. The Athletic is an interesting business model but similar ones have always failed within 3 years.

What is their business model?  Is it different than other online sports sites?

long form pay to read.

Yea there are too many free sources of mid level reporting to pay for the Athletic. Bill Voth has been solid since he joined the Panthers and they self report pretty well, but there definitely needs to be an independent source for Panthers news and we all know David Newton isn’t going to be enough.

The Observer will hire more. They seem to have a serious retention problem though. Thats 3 beat writers in just a year. Used to be a beat writer would be around for decades.

I stopped reading when the observer decided it was a smart idea to put a page limit on free reads.

Of course it was a smart idea. If you can get everything for free, why subscribe?

    • The good thing about replacing a bad player is you really have nothing to lose. If their replacement is bad so what, you didn't get much worse and probably saved money.
    • I came over from the old Panthers Insider site. When Fox Sports bought that platform it slowly just started dying plus the guy who ran that site was dealing with some pretty significant health issues so the whole thing just slowly fell apart. Quite a few of us migrated over here. Not sure how many are still around.  I miss that place. It struck a nice balance of having enough active posters to keep productive conversation flowing but didn't have so much traffic that you end up with a lot of trolling BS. This place is getting there though since we shutdown new registrations but at some point we're going to have to open it back up or we'll watch this place slowly die off too as posters fall off for one reason or another. We just have to figure out a way to filter out the spam bots. It was a never ending battle to ban the spam bots to keep then from overrunning the site. You'd think they'd be a little more strategic. I mean, if you fill a site with nothing but spam people are just going to stop coming so it's not a sustainable model. But nope, every one of them makes dozens of duplicate threads filling up pages upon pages as soon as their account goes live.
    • lol...I don't remember that.  Although recalling what I had for breakfast yesterday is sometimes a challenge.  Hope it was a positive thing.
