I think McCoy and Short will be very important to closing the gaps.

I was more concerned with Miller and Burns. Right now they are all questions and we need them to play at a high level. You also have to ask where someone like Mario Addison fits in.

.Cox jr. And Obada probably weren't very excited about the McCoy signing because if for sure means 1 of them are gone..

Jmo looking at the scenarios..

Both are the least flexible to a multiple scheme front on the roster..  (Both being 43 DE) who aren't fast or flexible enough to switch to OLB in a 3/4 .. Both aren't really big enough to get alot of snaps at 3/4 DE..

The trend I noticed is everybody is mentioning Marquise Hanyes  when talking about this defense. .. Marquise is poping up in every interview.. Could he be the under the radar guy who shines out of no where? While Cox and Obada fight for the last front 7 roster spot?

They actually gave Cox snaps at 3-4 DE last year.  If I remember correctly it was on passing downs.

I think there is still a good chance both Cox and Obada are on the 53 man roster.

Last year on the final 53-man roster there were 10 defensive lineman and 6 linebackers (16 total).

With the move to 3-4, let's suppose for argument sake they keep 8 defensive lineman and 8 linebackers (4 ILB's and 4 OLB's)

Let's start with the linebackers: 4 ILB's (Luke Kuechly, Shaq Thompson, Andre Smith, Jermaine Carter, Jr.)

4 OLB's/EDGE (Bruce Irvin, Brian Burns, Christian Miller, Marquis Haynes)

That still leaves 8 Defensive Lineman: (EDGE: Mario Addison, Bryan Cox, Jr., Efe Obada, & INTERIOR: Gerald McCoy, Kawaan Short, Dontari Poe, Vernon Butler, and Kyle Love)

Of course there is some grey area b/c any of the outside EDGE guys could theoretically line up as a down lineman or in a 2 point rushing stance.  Regardless, that still is only 16 total roster spots.

We are still going to need guys to play in the 4 man fronts, so I still think there is a place for all these guys. Burns & Miller are rookies, and Haynes is basically a red-shirt rookie.  Obada and Cox both have had significant game experience.  Without them, our only EDGE guys with any real NFL experience are Addison and Irvin.  That would be concerning IMO.

Now, I think there is obviously going to be some EDGE guys that are inactive on gameday, and that may also be a reflection of whether Rivera wants to use more 4 man fronts against a certain opponent.

Regardless, this is a much better situation to be in than what the defensive line looked like in January.  I am excited about both the potential and depth of this group.

I read that as if you were angry. Probably weren't but funny none the less.

Im more a obada fan. I think he has shown more and has more potential than cox. Not sure why the base loves him so much.

Agreed. And while neither have had sustained success, Obada did win NFL Player of the Week last year against the Bengals for a truly great game in which he recorded a sack and an incredible interception for a man his size. He also would have been credited with a forced fumble but it was recovered out of bounds. Obada also got another sack against Jameis Winston to finish with 2 for the year.

I like Cox, Jr., but Obada has the higher ceiling by a substantial amount. Obada is the superior athlete, and would have undoubtedly been drafted (and probably high) had he been in a situation to play college football. At 6-6, he has a much longer reach (3 passes defended last year) also. Obada never would have gotten the chance he did if he wasn't an athletic freak. Check out these measurements:

Wingspan: 83” (or 6’11”) – This was the same as Jadeveon Clowney recorded at the 2014 NFL Combine. In the 2015 draft class, Randy Gregory had the largest wingspan of pure edge rushers in this class, with 81.9”. Among tight ends, Clive Walford had the biggest wingspan, at 81.5”.

Arm Length: 35.6” – It’s actually hard to compare Obada’s length to anyone. Danielle Hunter had the longest arms amongst edge rushers in this class, with 34.3” arms. Clive Walford’s 34” arms were the longest among tight ends. The longest arms of anyone at the 2015 NFL Combine were Florida’s 355lb offensive lineman, Trenton Brown (36”).

40 yard dash: 4.63s – At the 2015 NFL Combine, this would have been good for second among tight ends, and sixth among defensive linemen.

10 yard split: 1.53s – This is the truly astonishing statistic. Obada’s 10 yard split time (which is far more important for defensive linemen than the 40 yard dash) cannot be compared amongst defensive linemen or tight ends, because it’s so much better than his counterparts. In fact, only six prospects at the 2015 NFL Combine ran a faster 10 yard split than Obada (five wide receivers, and one defensive back).

Broad Jump: 121” – Would have been good for joint-first amongst tight ends at the 2015 Combine, and in the top-10 for defensive linemen.

Those are impressive numbers, and are the primary reason (though not to discount his drive and determination) he was given a shot at the NFL...

Cox, Jr. played at a big-time school in Florida and had been around football all his life due to his dad who played and has coached in the league for many years. Injuries in college probably prevented him for being a late-round pick.

Both guys have talent and good work ethic from all indications.

I personally believe both have a legitimate shot at making the roster, and Rivera can find ways to utilize them regardless of whether they are using 3 or 4 man fronts. While they are bigger (and heavier) than guys like Brian Burns or Christian Miller, they are not dinosaurs out there. Julius Peppers and Mario Addison both played in primarily 3-4 systems at points in their career.

I also think the team is going to use 4-3 looks a decent amount. I dont think the change in defense is going to make either of these guys obsolete if they can perform. Rivera has proven himself to scheme his defense around the talent he has, regardless of the variations in fronts, etc.

I think the minute we cut Obada (or maybe Cox), they get picked up by the team residing out of Arthur's Anus.

I hope both can make the team, but if it's just one, I don't know how it's not Obada.

I do want to add I think Cox, Jr. can be a good rotational player. Rivera and Hurney have obviously seen enough in him for him to have a roster spot for 2 years. He can play.

I just think Cox's ceiling is a backup/depth player while Obada has the potential to become a starter and potentially an impact player.

Obada would be a Pro-Bowler if he could string together games like the one he had against the Bengals. That is talent beyond what I think Cox can give the team.

I am hoping neither Miller or Burns start but are brought along as they develop. We have vets like Addison who will start and right now are the more complete player.

Of course.

Haynes fits the role of the 3-4 OLB to a flippin' T... he was an utter, useless fish out of water playing DE in 4-3 sets (and would/will continue to be).
