Gano could possibly go to IR per Rodrigue

Tying up an IR spot this early on a kicker seems like a move we might regret down the line. It's gonna be a long season, and who knows what the backend of our season will look like. He's 32, if the knee is that bad, at this point an outright release has to be considered.

I don’t think either kicker will be traded at any point this year. Gano starts year on IR. Ideally Slye comes in and kicks ass and we leave Gano on IR all year (allowing us to not use a return designation on him just in case) and cut him next offseason. If Slye winds up sucking, we have a backup plan in Gano

What do you mean ‘tying up an IR spot?’ There isn’t a limit on IR spots. You get two return designations and they don’t have to be designated until mid season. And releasing Gano doesn’t help us at all compared to just keeping him on IR

I made the point in another thread but it will only save us $1 million this year to cut Gano. What are we planning to do with an extra million at this point that would be more important than having some insurance in case Slye doesn't pan out? Let's not forget that he still has never kicked a fg in the regular season. I'm hopeful but I think it's prudent we at least have a backup plan.

  That covers it.

This is NOT the same as the Gano/Butker decision. Even cutting Gano, and assuming Slye sticks, we are still paying almost 7M for our PK in 2019-20. And then Slye can get a new contract or a decent raise because as an UDFA he can get a deal after 2 years.

I should have specified more clearly, but with the return designation added is what I was referring to. You only get two, anyone who knows anything about the Panthers knows their history with IR and learning from mistakes. Let's leave it at that.

At the halfway point and we are 5-3 but Slye has cost us a couple games and has otherwise been mediocre, you wouldn’t want to bring Gano back? Gano is at worst league average. He’s certainly better than someone like Blair Walsh who would be one of our best options if Slye gets the yips.

Also at week 8 we basically already know who the other candidates for IR-Return would be since anyone going on IR after that point isn’t coming back until the playoffs. If we used both and someone really important has an 8 week injury they can always just be kept on the roster.

But fortunately we don't have to preemptively designate him to return. If 8 weeks have passed and Slye is doing well, we keep Gano on IR for the year. If on the other hand Slye is struggling mightily and Gano has recovered completely, then it's hard to say it would be a waste to use one of our 2 IR returns on Gano.

Makes me wonder if this whole 3-4 thing has been blown out of proportion and we're just going to use it sparingly.

There really isn’t that much difference between a 4-3 and a 3-4 when you’re in nickel which we will be 2/3 of the time. NT comes off the field, DEs become DTs, OLBs become DEs and it’s more or less the same 4-2-5 nickel that we used with the 4-3.

Even the base defenses aren’t that much different.

Yeah I wouldn’t IR him. If he’s not ready by the IR designated to return list date I’d cut him and take chances with Slye

So would I.

But to be fair, neither of us is set to get kicked out of the house if this season goes bad.

No way that could come back to bite us

So could wasting one of two designate to return. I’m actually a fan of gano as far as kickers go he gives you something not too many kickers in the league can give. But that knee is not right, soreness like this doesn’t last over a month. I think it’s something serious and that is more worrisome to me then going with Slye unfortunately. It’s definitely a tricky situation.

    • You honestly think Tampa would have traded down with a division rival so their rival could land a “generational player” at a massive position of need for TB?   bruh
    • Ya'll better quit throwing shots at Zod. He'll come in here and ban everybody. I had a friend @prosource who was banned in 2015 because he said some very minor things about Zod being an ass to the posters on the main forum after starting the All-Pro one. He said he felt like another level is cool, but don't punch down on people that don't want All-Pro. (He did say that it wasn't going to last long anyways.🤔) I distinctly remember him calling and being like "dude, I got banned, my profile says I don't have access to the Huddle!") I feel like once Tepper came in and cut off all unofficial access to the team, Zod was going to be around less. The All-Pro board had really good photos, even in game stuff, and I remember seeing him behind a little fenced in area at Wofford for non team sanctioned press/photographers after Tepper bought the team. I knew then his ego wouldn't allow him to continue with past fervency and effort with that reduction in access. Dude was literally in the locker room when JR was owner.  I came over in 2011 immediately after finding out this place existed. I was super involved with the Charlotte forum, and fell off after its demise. I will never forget arguing Pep over Ryan Sims on that forum! Who is Ryan Sims some of you may ask? My answer is exactly!
    • And not see him running free. Because has been free a lot more than he gets credit for.    Now what XL does with that when he does see the ball, is on him.
