I'm not sure if it's because the injury is that "bad" or if it's the fact that Cam has been playing hurt and compromised on the field for so long now being unable to do the things that he knows he can do when healthy that the game had simply stopped being fun for him. It's probably starting to really feel like a grind. Maybe he's just grown tired of that and realizes he needs to get right to make the game fun again. This foot situation is probably super frustrating for him. All the focus has been on getting that shoulder right for two years now and then he hurts his damn foot in a meaningless preseason game. That just sucks for all involved.

You know what the situation you described sounds like though, right?

Oh, I absolutely agree. At some point fighting constant injuries just isn't worth putting more millions in the bank when you already have plenty of millions in the bank. When you're set for life and it's no longer fun, hang 'em up.

I think that's what a lot of people are afraid of.

People dismissed the idea as ridiculous prior to the start of the season. Turns out it may not be so silly after all.

Barring a major turnaround from current events, Igo's prediction that  Newton might retire this offseason could actually come true.

(shocking, because Igo's predictions almost never come true)

It’s a messy situation no matter how you look at it. Ron and Marty are trying to keep their jobs and will more than likely push Cam to play. Cam has finally got to a point where he’s thinking about his future and is “tired of being injured “.

If I’m Cam I’m sitting out until I’m fully 100%. This kid has given everything he has for this team and they have refused to protect him.

I dont understand this then.....what is the reason for not using Cam in the run game at all if, according to Ron, he thought Cams foot was just fine on Thursday?  Hes alluding to there being some reason, just that its not the foot.  So, what was it then?  I think Ron is lying and hes backed himself into a corner now.

Ron should be unemployed.  Hurney should be unemployed.  The whole damn staff should be unemployed.

What Cam critically needs is a second and even a third medical opinion of his condition OUTSIDE OF the controlling umbrella of the Carolina Panthers.

The fan base is getting swept away in the media frenzy. Granted, the cryptic messaging from the team is not helping matters. I usually try to give every season at least six weeks until I decide if it’s over or not. If this team is sitting at 1-5, and Cam is officially IR, ok. Then there’s a reason to begin to plan ahead.

There is endless speculation about Newton retiring. The only thing they’re basing that on is Andrew Luck. Unless there’s some other source I’m unaware of (That’s very possible, please, enlighten me if there’s something substantive in print or elsewhere that suggests a real possibility that he’ll retire.)

Cam complaining that he’s tired of hurting doesn’t tell me he’s ready to quit. It does say a lot, but it doesn’t tell me retirement is on the horizon.

Otherwise, and sorry to be blunt: it’s all just speculative bullshit.

And everybody wins, because everybody gets the clicks.

I think second opinions are always good.

Side Note: Can't help wondering what Ron and Marty would think of this story and Joe's advice.

We're all kind of at the mercy of what we don't know right now, primarily because what we do know is bad.

What I know is the offensive line looks terrible, the receivers can’t separate, and when the quarterback does have time he’s missing the mark.

The foot is a big mystery, but that’s how they want it.

This feels more like a take a few weeks off, get right, come back and make a push type of situation. It doesn’t feel like retirement.

But if he does, hey, next man up.

As far as Newton's future, I don't know how it feels right now. There's a million variables in that discussion, most of which we don't have any access to.

As far as the team right now, I think we're bad. The quarterback being injured is a big part of that, but I don't know that it's the majority of it.

Igo has said many times that the team has for a long time "tiptoed" around Newton for fear of doing anything to offend him (something that drafting a potential replacement could conceivably have done).

I don't know if that's the reason, but it's one theory.

If that’s true then the staff needs to be ejected.

for fear of what? Him walking? Him not wanting another contract?

Cam up to this point even with the MVP has been very team friendly, very much about the team winning.

He’s made no hints at wanting more money.

for him it would be good to pack it in and get healthy so he’s got options next year.

unless Superman shows up and bulldozes us to win the next 10 games,.. then I’m sure the narrative changes.

the higher probability is a team with high expectations a few weeks ago looks like schkit and seems to be imploding.

implode means coach gone,..

    • there seems to be a change or two in his personnel preferences.  For example, the safeties.  Another example:  the smallish NTs are out and 330 is back!
    • This is a good story--I LOVED his dad as a person and player--I talked to him at an OTA (he was back for his second stint) and he was talking about Moore (the WR from Wake Forest) being so young.  I was with my teenage son and told him, "This is Taylor.  He and I attended the OTAs when you were in Rock Hill as a rookie."  He jokes, "Was he in diapers then?" and laughed.  I imagine Moose III was in diapers when we chatted that day.  So I really would love for this to work out.  However, his stats do not suggest he was anything special in college.
    • I guess there are signs. The combination of the turf toe, hamstring, and knee issues led to questions about his long-term health and affected his draft stock, causing him to fall to the second round.  Here is what I know about a knee injury.  It changes nearly every aspect of your lower body movement.  So the turf toe and hamstring could be related.  It makes him seem injury prone.  I guess the knee was not the most recent injury, so the others could have been a result of favoring the knee. Johnson did not run the 40 at the combine or pro day.  That suggests there is something he feels might drop his value.  So if you downplay the severity of the injury, have a history of possibly related injuries, and refuse to demonstrate (when given multiple opportunities) that you are fully recovered, don't get mad when your stock drops.
