"It wasn't New York's best game"

So says Sean Payton (link)

After beating the Panthers on a last-second field goal, you might have thought Sean Payton would take the high road and let previous slights slide.

You would be mistaken.

The Saints coach made sure to get his digs in, after the Panthers had a chance to go ahead late thanks to a pass interference call on review.

“It wasn’t our best game, it wasn’t their best game, and quite honestly it wasn’t New York’s best game,” Payton said, via Katherine Terrell of TheAthletic.com.

The Panthers challenged a pass interference on a third-and-goal from the 5-yard line, alleging that Jarius Wright was held up as he crossed the middle of the field. Considering the dismal record of challenges of uncalled pass interference penalties, it seemed like a waste of a timeout by Ron Rivera.

But after review, officials called Saints rookie Chauncey Garnder-Johnson for PI.

After the Saints were jammed out of a trip to the Super Bowl last year, and after Payton offered more suggestions last week on  how the league could improve the process, it had to gall him. He challenged one early in the game and lost, seemingly just trying to prove a point rather than having a sincere hope it would go his way.

On the flipside, Al Riveron says there was "clear and obvious" evidence to overturn the call.

    • It's crazy with how much winning was going on when we had a little cool off period that we're still just a couple games out of 6th. Moussa is getting better every week and Coby is getting comfortable. Would be nice to get to 6 but I think this team is a lot more stacked than the last couple play ins. I can't remember the exact rules but if you're 7th seed and win the first game I think you automatically move on and don't have to play the second game?
    • I think it was a thing for sure. Panthers weren’t too many people’s first choice. Or 5th choice.  2022 and 2023… coaches fired mid season. Consecutive years. You want any of that?  He has definitely overseen a rehab of how the Panthers are perceived. Because we are a place that is seen as up and coming. And just the little thing of he accommodated Theilen so graciously, that gets noticed. It all adds up. Dan is doing a lot of things right, probably most things.  Needs a good draft.
    • K, I think that is dumb, but you do you. I didn't find anything online that made him out to be a dislikable person. I am certain the Panthers would have cared so much if they lost your fandom if they hired Sean Payton. But bet you would have come crawling back if Sean lead us to a Super Bowl victory or Golden leads UNC to a champion ship. It is easy to say you are gonna leave a team if the hire someone you dislike when the chips are down. But people like you tend to come crawling back once the team finds success.
