Cam should be given a chance to prove he still got it, but not a guarantee.  It’s fair.  Everyone will compete for the starting job and let the best man be our starter next season.

I agree, but you cannot spend year three of the "Is Cam done" experiment without developing Plan B.  We need to draft and groom a potential starter this offseason.

1st Round : Derrick Brown

2nd Round : Best Available C/G

3rd Round: Best Available C/G

That is what I want to do (draft a C/G in round 2) but we cannot enter 2020 with Kyle and Will at backup QB.  Cam's health, Cam's contract status, etc. It will be interesting to see how they handle things in free agency.

I feel this way myself but honestly do you think there’s a better option anywhere for us for next season. Because a player playing for a contract usually drops his nuts (has a good year) lol especially someone like Cam. Especially after having a substantial amount of time off. I’d expect the 6-2 Cam but more deep passes. And the price tag isn’t hefty at all that’s a key point he’s making middle of the pack money this upcoming season for a starter so it’s not to pricey to play it out. Not for another thread but I don’t think there’s a real winning option beside Cam so let’s embrace the come back player of the year.

I agree with you and I don’t know if there are any better options. I suppose I’d rather save that money and bolster the lines and then find our QB of the future. If Cam was healthy or I had any confidence that he could stay healthy then the cap wouldn’t be an issue. So for me it’s is Cam worth middle of the pack QB money if he’s on IR or playing at a lower level than we’re accustomed to.

Im on board with 2 and 3, on the fence with Cam. Prior injury history, crap diet and a hefty price tag have me extremely skeptical.

" I still think Rhule, Hurney and Tepper will ultimately decide to part with Newton, either via a trade or a release, sometime this offseason. It’s not the $21.1 million Newton is due if he stays so much as it is that the Panthers are now in obvious rebuilding mode."  Quote from Scott Fowler Charlotte Observer

I’d like to see a restructure or a short extension that would essentially be a “prove it” type scenario if they stick with him.

That’s a big piece of the puzzle too, do you stick with Cam in the event of a rebuild? I’m curious to see how they approach this offseason, because as @LinvilleGorge pointed out we aren’t TOO far from fielding a competitive team. So do they go all in on rebuild or merely address a few needs before other windows close?

I don't think you're in obvious rebuild mode unless and until you move on from Cam. And honestly, if you're in obvious rebuild mode, you should probably shop Luke too.

Thoughts and prayers in advance to the Panthers' PR team if they move on from Cam and Luke in the same offseason.

The problem with merely addressing a few needs is that we will be right back to square one in a year or so at the same place we are now with the same issues. Tepper has put up with  a basic status quo mode for two years and now he has a mover and shaker as head coach that thinks like he does, wanting to build an organization that is solid year after year. This is why i feel we will be in some type rebuilding mode, the question will be how severe.

What you don't want is a decent stop gap FA QB behind Cam in case he can't complete next season, or yet another later round QB draft pick. A halfway decent QB taking over would push this team down the draft board and we'd be in HELL because we wouldn't be able to draft a top QB, and Mr. Stop Gap QB wouldn't lead us to a SB or anything close.

What you want is Grier behind Cam, and if Cam falls apart you can rest easy knowing we'll have a probably have a top draft pick and snag our franchise QB. We're not winning a SB until we have our franchise elite QB. The wanting 8-8 with a veteran QB is a horseshit nightmare.

Another option is to move on from Cam and draft our QB with the #7 pick. I don't want that because I think Cam has more football in him, but if we went that route the pressure on Hurney and the scouting department would be extreme. A busted QB pick at 7 could be the end of Hurney imo.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
