As to your comment about 64 being old -- how old do you think Wade is?

Way to miss the point

By the age of 32, Wade Phillips was already a defensive coordinator in the NFL (granted nepotism helped grease the cart).  My point was not that he was 64, but that he made it to 64 without achieving anything.

To quote another huddler,

Quote

None of his defenses really finished high nationally.  Only one respectable year at Baylor.

His best defense at Baylor ranked #39.  They registered 20th in points.  The other 2 seasons at Baylor his defense were trash.

I'm digging your handle! :shades:

Ha. Go Cats! I was talking to a buddy of mine that was a running back while we were in school. Rhule was in Cullowhee at the time and my friend said he was the best coach he’s ever had. By far, not even close.

I have one son going to Western now and the other will be there in 2021.  Even more reason to pull for Rhule.

Bobo- do some research and don’t be such a hater out of the gate. Temple had the 11th ranked defense in the country in 2016. Temple! Who has been a dumpster fire for EVER before Rhule and Snow got there.

We’ve got nothing to lose here. Our defense under all seasoned “NFL” guys was hot garbage this year. It can’t get any worse and it’s very likely to get better. I’m excited about the new regime regardless if Snow is the DC or not.

Temple also changed conferences when they arrived.... and they played utter trash when they achieved that great defensive rank

Class of '99 myself.  I was at working at O'Malley's one afternoon when Brad and some buddies came in and said he got an invite to Panthers camp.  I was super stoked for him, even though I was certain he'd get cut.  Amazingly, he earned a roster spot.  I was like, 'what are the freaking odds that a WCU player landed on the Panthers?'

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
