2020 Free Agency

I'd be surprised if the Panthers sign any free agents before the June compensatory cut-off. Part of rebuilding is acquiring as many draft picks as possible. Letting James Bradberry walk and signing Robbie Anderson has an opportunity cost of a 3rd round compensatory pick.

Interesting point--Bradberry wants big money and we can draft a CB and go with what we have in 2020.  Then the pick we get for Bradberry later makes the loss bearable.  In addition, we save the $13m + he is going to demand.

Hurney was supposedly in negotiations with Boston and Bradberry when we last visited him.  Must not be going too well.  Boston always wants more that he is worth, so we could loose 2 players who think they deserve more $$ than they can get here.  MH is probably scared to do anything stupid right now.

3 other local guys

DJ Humphries- local Charlotte kid who was rumored to have been drafted by us had he fallen.  After a few injury filled season's, he finally put together a decent year.  Expect a prove year deal for him.

DJ Reader- need a big NT to help clog the middle on Run D?  Reader has been a stud in Houston's 3-4 but could fill in nice here.  This defense has not been the same simce Star left.  Poe hasnt been what we wished and what Falcons fans warned us.

Javon Hargrave- another Local NT.  The Steelers starting NT hasnt been a big stat filler in sacks but is that perfect clog the middle guy.  In 2018 PFF gave him a 82.7 grade which was the 19th best DL.

Nice work

I’m not ready to trust DJ over Bradbury....not even close

If you buy into the idea that DJ didn't receive good coaching and that he has talent, it's not a stretch to assume he can recapture and improve on what he did his first year. DJ needed a fresh start and this staff brings that. I think that could apply to SEVERAL under-performing players.

And DJ is much cheaper.

I'm just not that into Bradberry for $14M per.

I see us in a tank mode this season as another reset . We will most likely let everyone go and sign stop gaps for the year and not spend big and let the cap grow and in a year or two we go big in free agency to add to the core with our draft picks

I can't see us dipping into FA for a receiver at all.  We have one who is on the verge of becoming a star, we have Hogan who can be solid, we still aren't sure what we've got with Curtis . . . but early reports seem to indicate the draft is pretty deep at receiver.

Brady likes 4 and 5 receiver sets.  So, I fully expect us to bring in at least one or two high level receivers through the draft and/or FA.  I don't expect one in the first or to break the bank for one, but I wouldn't be shocked to see us take one in the 2nd (especially if Jefferson is still there) or to get a mid-level FA for approx. 10-11 million or so in FA.

Hogan is a FA, and even if we resign him and keep Wright, we still need at least one more playmaker at WR to go along with DJ and Curtis.  The playmaking receiver would either be someone that has had success in the NFL or played at a high level in college.  Zylstra looked the part of someone that could see more action in the new offense, but he doesn't have the track record of someone we can assume will play a big role.

So, if we keep Wright, we would have DJ, Samuel, Wright, and Zylstra on the roster, so we would need to re-sign Hogan (or find a replacement), and bring in another playmaker at WR.

    • Sorry man you lost me at "Teppers have evolved as owners". Limped into playoffs at 8-9 not even above .500 Tepper is trash as an owner bro and that's not even a discussion at this point. 37-83 w/l ratio. Nuff said.... Morgan tho, he's cooking and it ain't cuz of Teppers leadership
    • After listening to Morgan's presser twice, I came away with some key beliefs. First of all, I don't think he's a bullshitter. What you see is what you get. When he says something, he means it.  The Teppers really have evolved as owners. Morgan has mentioned how they're easy to work with--a pleasure to work with a few times now. There seems to be a good relationship between all of them (and include Dave Canales on that). We'll see if it lasts. Yes, no one wanted to come to Carolina with the previous management, but that seems to have changed. The team signed arguably the top Edge, LB and OT on the market, two of them on pretty good deals and one on what I'll say is "not a bad one." And, credit Sunshine Dave "Flowers and Cotton Candy" Canales for helping to change the culture. Morgan mentioned getting guys--and I'm paraphrasing--that are not only great football players but great people. Don't look for us to be acquiring any James Pearce types anytime soon, just saying. We'll see if that holds true in the future. Dan Morgan really has set up the Panthers to take the BPA/BAP. He mentioned it at least a couple of times, and he doesn't seem pressured to pinpoint a particular position. He just wants quality players that will help the team. This is how it's going to be (to your joy or dismay, probably for as long as he's here), and personally I love it. Many of us know how Morgan was when he played: aggressive! That's what he's going to be when making acquisitions. He explicitly said it, and emphasized it. All avenues are open (think FA, waivers...the draft)! Personally, as long as it's controlled aggression and not reckless aggression, I love it.  On KP: "Mobility is big in this league."  He basically says if another QB is the BPA while drafting--we're going by our board, people--we're going to add them.        ...
    • Canes are so fascinating. Despite inconsistent defense and poor goalie play they keep winning.
