Rhule on Cam

Two things:

7-8 wins and we have to pay Cam out the butt.  Tepper already said the big qb contract is a no no (in so many words)

Nobody is saying a top 5 pick makes us good instantly but its a part of the process that makes us good eventually.

Personally I think there is no way Cam is rolling out there on a prove it type one year deal especially with him coming off the injuries.  I guess we shall see in the next month or so.

He may not. But if Cam doesn’t play for us next year I’d much rather trade McCaffrey to start the rebuilding process. But that’s a separate discussion I don’t wanna get into here. Cam isn’t gonna get a first round draft pick. Like your boy Gross said, we might get a 3rd.

I agree with all of that.

What’s he supposed to say?

”We’ll see...”?

I’m surprised he didn’t say that, to be honest. The organization has gone out of their way to manage expectations on this. Of course, I can’t verify that this even happened. I have no reason to believe the guy made it up. But, sometimes you can’t put too much stock into these things.

The RumGone makes perfect sense except for 1 reason .  If some team makes an insane offer for Cam , you have to take a hard look on keeping him .  I'm in the keeping Cam camp .  He is the face of the team and fans will fill the stands just to see how he does . He is also does a lot for the Charlotte area .

I wouldn’t read too much into this, as exciting as it may be. Of course the plan is to win a SB with the QB you’ve got. Plans can change very quickly. I’m not convinced Cam is gone like many are (Jeremy) but I don’t think this comment means much either way. Still 50/50 to me whether he stays or not.

In my opinion the best option for the team is to keep him this year without extending him and see if he can stay healthy and play at a high level. If he does you pay him next offseason and we’re in good shape. If not, you move on after the season and likely get a top QB in the draft.
Next best option if Cam refused to play without an extension is to trade him for a late first (Vegas makes sense) or something else of value. But don’t give him away for peanuts. Better off keeping him on the roster inactive and getting a comp pick than just giving him away for free. The team has the leverage here.

Plenty want him gone no matter what

Those people aren't real fans. Cam is one of the best things to ever happen to the Panthers. If he's healthy there are few better QB's in the NFL. If he can't ever be healthy again, I understand why they would part ways with him.

One thing is certain, Cam on the field sells tickets. Tepper is going to have a harder time selling tickets for this sorry team than in the past two seasons he's been the owner. He might be wise to keep Cam to fill the stadium regardless if he can win games or not.

Serious doubt any team is gonna make an insane offer on a qb who was injured the past two seasons. Could be wrong but it’s not likely.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
