Albert Breer: Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio could be hired after his contract runs out

The entire notion that we have to keep Marty here through the draft is one of the more laughable things I have ever heard in my entire life.

You literally could bring in John Dorsey on a short term consultant role and he could do just as good of a job, if not better than Hurney.

Tepper has made some very confusing moves in his time here, but keeping Marty is one of the most idiotic things I have ever seen a smart person do.  I simply do not get it.

Not saying I agree with the decision to keep Hurney but it's tough to fire a GM in January. The scouting process for the 2020 draft has been underway for months. I have a feeling this is Marty's last draft with the Panthers but hopefully they've added someone else to help him by draft time.

I'm not saying that it would be good or bad at this point, but the "WHO WOULD RUN THE DRAFT" notion is stupid.

Hell, 90% of the posters here agree that Hurney is good in the 1st, and pretty bad the rest of the way....just how bad do you think someone else could be?

And I too believe that this will be his last one, but his last one should have been years and years ago when even the senile old man let him go.

Billy Marshall had me on his podcast a few months ago. They never aired it, for whatever reason. But he and I spent 20 minutes railing about Marty’s evaluation skills. If I can find the recording, and he’ll let me distribute it, I’d love to share it. It was entertaining AF.

Especially after having one of his worst, if not the worst, drafts he's ever had.

Someone else that is not prepared could be worse than bad, like Shaq at the free throw line terrible.  you're advocating throwing away months of scouting work because???  you don't like him?  That's incredibly shortsighted.

Hopefully Hurney will get a demotion of sorts after the draft, but he's obviously going to be a big part of this one and it's easy to see why Tepper is staying to course for now.

I too have issues with Hurney, mostly due to the fact that he's pretty much a yes man.  Gettleman had his issues as well but at least he was willing to draw a line in the sand and tell Richardson, "no."

Dave did some things in 2016 that just felt off. And then, he paid Matt Kalil a ton of money.

He pissed off some veterans, too, but the seeds of his downfall were planted in 2016.

Overall, I admire the work he did when he came in.

Do you seriously believe that Marty is the head scout?  Or does most of the scouting for the Panthers?

Again, I'm not advocating firing him before the draft, but to say that the team couldn't figure it out, and that everything that Hurney has compiled is just all in his head and not written down, not distributed to the other decision makers and scouts, etc. seems really dumb.

Yeah, you need somebody with some experience to run the draft. I have my issues with Marty, but at this point, it’s too late to make that move until after the draft.

Agreed, I'm just saying that it could be done, may not be the best idea, but to say that it's impossible is being very short sighted.

    • One word to describe next year's QB draft class...DEEP!  To me, this is Bryce's make or break year.  The organization probably doesn't feel that way and will likely anoint him as the starter to at least 2027 no matter what.  Some of these dude's will likely stay in college, but the bulk of them will be coming out.  Manning and Sellers are two probably staying. That's not to say that the 2027 QB class will be crappy or thin, because I honestly don't know.  It usually does skip at least a year--or more, but rarely two bumper crops of QBs in consecutive years. https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2026/story/_/id/45453107/2026-nfl-draft-quarterback-class-top-prospects-klubnik-sellers-manning
    • I think Ransom will be a solid player for us.  He played beside Caleb Downs, the cornerstone of the Ohio State defense last year and some have him as a top 5 pick for the 2026 draft.  He was characterized as the smart, instinctive, versatile safety.   I just don't think S will be a liability unless we have injuries.  I am very interested in seeing what they have in the three UDFA safeties; I see one making the roster. As for CB, I think they are higher on Wade-Smith than most of us are. Again, depth is a concern.  We have to hope Jackson has another solid season and Horn does not injure his leg or toe on one of the yard lines.   I am not sure I would compare it to last season's DL because this year's DL will cover a lot of deficiencies, but I know what you mean---our weak link.
