QB Draft Rankings a Year* Out

3) I do not believe that Trevor Lawrence is far superior to Justin Fields. On true QB drop back passing plays Justin Fields had a higher rating than every QB this year including Burrow, Tua, Herbet and even Lawrence. While I think this is the first draft class in forever where I can see two day 1 starters that boost their teams in Fields and Lawrence it stands to reason you don't need to be the absolute worst team to get a QB of the future. If you finish in the bottom 4 you have a chance to snag Fields.

4) Be objective fans instead of homers. Remove the word "tank" and just admit we "suck". You don't have to tank, or lose on purpose, to secure yourself a top pick in the draft. Sometimes these magical teams come around and they are just bad. That is us. We are one of the lucky few who are in for a rough year before it even starts.

Well said.

Personally, I think the 2021 QB class could be as good as any the past 20 years. Lawrence, Fields, Lance, Newman and possibly a guy that sneaks in like Purdy/Costello/Trask.

The 2020 class looks like Burrow as a cornerstone franchise guy, but after that are question marks. I'd rather spend a 2021 pick on a QB, than settling for what's left after Burrow. Hurts is intriguing, but would prefer to focus on another defensive player in rounds 2 and 3. After that, it's a crapshoot on projects like Gordon, Morgan, etc. No need when you have PJ and Grier already here.

We won't tank in '21, but we will lose more than we will win, and probably picking in the top 5-8 next year.

In the first place, tanking is always a bad idea in a competition whose purpose is to win games.

When you factor in the unpredictable quality of the potential asset(s) to be gained by tanking, it becomes utterly pointless.

Be the best team you can be NOW and in every season, and evaluate opportunities as you go along, both within and outside the draft.

If Panthers want to tank for a future QB - start tanking for Sam Howell. It won’t surprise me to see him win multiples MVPs and Super Bowls once he is the league. Kid is a superstar.

Howell's game looks exactly like Will Grier.

If we are going off of the past then we shouldn't even have a draft because we haven't won any Super Bowls with any of the players we have drafted.

it was about tanking and picking who you think will win you a Super Bowl.  Russell won a Super Bowl and lost a Super Bowl before Cam played in one and when was Russell picked.  Doesn't matter what round they are pick.  Depends on the team intangibles

Howell can bring a team back and look what the kid did to the National Champs when they played in Chapel Hill.....came down to the last play.  He scared the hell out of the Clemson faithful that game.

Yeah, um, this team isn't winning until they rebuild, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Rebuild, start at QB. Nothing else matters.

The top of the 2021 QB draft is way, way better than pick 7 and it’s not close. Just picking a QB at 7 this year is dumb if they aren’t good enough. That’s the point of a “tank” this year even if nothing is guaranteed.  All we had to do was just not sign any expensive FAs and let Grier and PJ Walker run the show for a year and we’d be front runners and we’d have an extra 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th and $46M more cap to rollover this year (cut Short who’s done at this point). Pick 7 should be an elite defender and pick 1 next year is Lawrence. Pick BPA at 38 and 69, 33 and 65 next year, extend Moore/Moton and also have another 3rd, 3 4ths, 3 5ths, 3 6ths and 2 7ths. That should give us a nice base along side Burns, CMC and Shaq and maybe even Little and/or Daley.

That would be a nice way to go into 2022 with all that young talent and cap space to basically cover CMC and Moore’s extensions instead of just wasted cap I’m 2020 and 2021. Instead of Teddy, Robby and Kawann now we could sign 2 of these type of guys in 2022: Myles Garrett, Jamal Adams, TJ Watt, Marshon Lattimore and Darius Leonard.

Next year's draft means nothing if your savy vets win anything. Is it a guarantee you'll not suck enough to not be in position next year to pick so high?

Need a sure thing, a bird in the hand is better than a Trevor in the bush.

Tell me who the sure thing QB is this year. Also, what savvy vets are going to win us games with Grier starting?

Do you not remember Grier's comeback wins against Texas tech in 17 and Texas in 18?

To who? Steve Wonder?

uh, thanks but no thanks for the analysis there Mel Kiper.

Obvious blind homerism if you can't see the similarities. On the plus side for Howell, He looks like a senior Will Grier as a freshman. He has a much higher ceiling.
