Six games against MVP quarterbacks

Mr. Scot

Heard this mentioned on the radio earlier today...

We've got two games against Tom Brady, two against Matt Ryan, one against Aaron Rodgers and one against Patrick Mahomes.

Throw in two games against Drew Brees, who many people argue should have won an MVP but surprisingly never has.

Our defense is definitely going to get tested this season.

We've had more talented Panthers defenses do terrible against random scrub journeymen QBs. This is one of our least talented defenses going against many top QBs, so I think we're going to be slaughtered and end up with a much needed top 5 pick.

If we're using the most recent season as a yardstick, and that seems a pretty reasonable thing to do, Mahomes is obviously the most feared qb in the league right now and with good reason, no argument there. Brees was also a top five qb in performance last season, so that's 3 games that we should rightly regard as tough tests. However Brady, Ryan and Rogers finished the season with the 17th, 14th and 20th Total QBR last season.

None of them are young and the only substantial arguement that can be made to expect any of them to do markedly better this year is Brady moving to a new team with potentially more potent offensive weapons. A counterarguement could also be put forth that he's moving to a team with a HC who favors an offensive style dramatically different from the one that has showcased Brady's strengths his entire career.

Bottom line, five of these games do not especially frighten me. They are against aging qb's who are all showing signs of slowing down and none of whom put up particularly impressive statistical seasons last year. We have always had to deal with Brees and that will be a stiff challenge, and I would greatly prefer to watch Mahomes play against literally ANYBODY else, but on the bright side a midseason game against him will have given Rhule and Snow two months to put their defense into place and will be an intriguing measuring stick as to how that process is progressing.

I am just ready for it to be over with. Too bad we can't skip past the next 3-5 seasons and get to the "built" part of the rebuilding, assuming that happens in this decade.

    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
    • When the broadcast showed the two benches side by side during the last TV timeout, it was pretty obvious the whole operation is a shitshow. If I was the owner, I would play that clip, with commentary, on the jumbotron at MSG as I fired the coach, GM, President, the whole lot. Bring in your AHL leadership team, wholesale, to finish out the season and start from scratch next year.  Can't fire all the players and fold the season. But, hopefully decapitating the zombie will light a fire under the body and burn out the cancer of the roster. (It makes sense if you don't think about it...) There are obviously issues on the roster. But, you can't have the entire coaching staff completely tuned out with 5 minutes left in a 2 goal game this early in the season. And you can't trust the people that hired them to hire the next staff. If you trust your AHL GM/Scouts, let them run the deadline firesale.   ...     Please don't let the owner read any of this. Because, this poo is hilarous!
