I think you and others here are significantly overvaluing Turner. He and his contract were a liability here. We weren’t going to get much draft capital for him. The team determined it was better to take a chance on Okung. I’m not a fan of Okung and don’t like the trade but even if Okung sucks or retires it’s just not a big deal. There is some upside there but if he doesn’t realize that here it just doesn’t really hurt us that much.

So is it a cap move, or Turner sucking?

Turner was a 5 time Pro Bowler at the age of 26. With a 2 yr/20M contract with no guaranteed money. That still has value.

It saved money in 2021.  Follow me here.  All along we have been posturing for 2021

How? Don’t just say it. Explain why? I already explained, as have others, why not?

And if you’re posturing for 2021, why trade for a player on a one year deal, and injured, 31 yo LT. Who was going to keep your possible LT on the bench?

Obviously it was impossible for Marty to anticipate the pandemic and Okung's possible retirement. It would be rather foolish for Okung, who has enough money to buy an island, to risk his life playing this season.

I have always seen this season as just a stepping stone in our total rebuild of the team. I just want high draft picks, a lot of cap space for 2021, and valuable experience for the young guys and coaches. I expect this team to be at the bottom of the league this season, and that is not the end of the world.

But what was Okung going to do? Help us win 2 games instead of 1?

Bare minimum give Little more time to learn and not prove to be another Hurney bust.

That’s not happening and I don’t see Little panning our either.

It’s been 6 years since Gross retired and the FO has flipped flopped around not only failing at addressing the issue but making some of the most stupid possible moves burying the franchise, holding it back.

LT is by far the second most important position on the offense it’s baffling a team can be so inept at investing in it. Especially looking back and seeing the olineman we could’ve had and who the Panthers actually took.

Sure hindsight, but the fact I see better, doable, past Panther mock drafts from armchair amateurs in their Cheeto and Mountain Dew stained wife beaters and tighty whiteys living in their mom’s basements than what the Panthers millionaire professionals are doing is a bit concerning.

It wasn't impossible. Businesses were preparing for this in February. The writing was on the wall and it was looking like it could be the 21st century Spanish flu. Marty gambled. Time will tell if he lost.

Did you post anything complaining about Marty signing Okung being a mistake due to COVID at the time?

Can we actually wait until he actually decides he's retiring or not before we launch into a multipage back and forth tirade about how foolish trading for him was? The amount of conversation spurring from Okung saying he would CONSIDER retiring IF things appear unsafe is excessive. He made a very logical statement. I'm surprised he didn't just opt out but the very fact that he didn't means he's at least contemplating playing out this year. Take a breath people.

You could argue that Drafting Luke was dumb because he would retire early.  the Contracts are the thing--not the player's decision.

Okung is probably retiring.  Do you want a player here whose mind is toying with retirement?  Instead, lets develop a young T on the roster to see what we have.

If Little shows promise, we can focus on C in the second round next year.

If he struggles, we can try him at G.  Regardless, we enter the draft more knowledgeable.

Panthers tackle Russell Okung didn’t opt out, but he may eventually retire. It’s a smart way to manage an opt-out deadline that arrived way too early for NFL players to make an informed decision about whether to be all in or all out of the 2020 season five weeks before the first game is played.

If Okung eventually retires, he’d owe the Panthers up to $2.5 million in signing bonus money. The debt would arise even though the Chargers, not the Panthers, made the payment. That’s the Jake Plummer dynamic; when he was traded from the Broncos to the Buccaneers more than a decade ago, Plummer retired. And the Buccaneers eventually recovered a significant seven-figure payment from him (albeit not 100 cents on the dollar) via arbitration.

The question becomes whether the Panthers would pursue Okung for the payment, if he indeed retires.

I already did . Turner was set to make 11 million in 2021, plus wanted an extension.  Trading him resulted in a cap hit this year only, with Okung on a one year deal with no commitment next year.  End result - we cleared 11+ million for 2021, without an obligation to extend Turner.  Gaining a pro bowl LT was a bonus if he was healthy and played.  It looks like he may not, but regardless this was more about clearing space in 2021.
