Panthers in extension talks with Taylor Moton

Right tackle Taylor Moton should be a priority for an extension from the Panthers. I’m told by league sources talks are ongoing but nothing is imminent. Said Moton: “I have a lot of trust in my agent. I’m 100 percent focused on Taylor Moton being the best offensive tackle I can be.’’

This is good news.  I dont think Moton is a great RT but he is probably above average and its imperative to sign him if we are going to build a competent oline moving forward.

I like Moton, he’s literally the only olineman deserving of money. And it’s funny seeing guys like Paradis and M Kalil hoggin all the olineman money.

Knowing Hurney though this may be very bad for the Panthers and Oline, yet again.

Thats really not a bad deal for a franchise LT.  Probably isnt too bad for Moton if he balls out this year

I want Moton to be worth a nice new fat contract, I'm just not sure he has yet. I really wanted to get a look at him in this new system and under new coaches. Hopefully it's a solid contract and nothing crazy.

Honestly it's par for the course that we would be looking to extend him right now:

1. He hasn't earned it

2. He's merely average at his position

These two line up for the perfect Hurney extension

with the salary cap expanding (pre covid) and the new CBA do not be surprised that this deal is going to look huge when in reality it will just be a new normal.

According to PFF, he has earned it. He’s been ranked really high pass blocking wise and average run blocking. He was just ranked 20th in their tackle preview for 2020, so above average with room to improve. We have no other good OL signed past this year so we need to extend him and he should hopefully not be crazy expensive as a RT.

At this point assuming the salary cap will DECREASE going forward seems like the logical assumption since it’s based on total league revenue and that seems near guaranteed to go down due to COVID impact. Any deals made now that do not take this into account seem likely to look horribad in a year or 2 imo.
