Week 1 final injury report: Dennis Daley ruled out

CHARLOTTE — Starting left guard Dennis Daley has been ruled out of Sunday's season opener with the Raiders after missing four straight practices with an ankle injury. 

Veteran offensive lineman Michael Schofieldwill start in Daley's place. Schofield has started 66 career games, including 32 over the last two seasons for the Chargers. That gives him some familiarity with the Raiders' defense.

"He's had a good camp, so we're very excited to have him go out there and play," Rhule said.

Cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III(hamstring) and defensive end Stephen Weatherly (hamstring) are questionable for Sunday's contest. Weatherly was a limited participant in Friday's practice, but Rhule expects Weatherly to play though he realizes the defensive end's hamstring could tighten.

"There's always a level of concern," Rhule said. "He'll give us as many snaps as he can."

Linebacker Adarius Taylor also did not practice on Friday, but his absence was not injury-related.

I'm not talking solely about quality.

The thing about lower round picks and undrafted guys is that often they look half-decent, but have only a limited shelf life.

Said it before: Predicting how good a guy is going to be is actually easier than predicting how long he's going to stay that good.

You guys are selling Daley short, hes going to turn out GREAT for a 6th. He'll be looking like the 2nd rounder and be in talks with Hardy about being the best 6th rounders in Panthers history. Playing LT as a rookie that went to camp training as a OG, thats a feat with every few f-ups.

      I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.

      Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.

      They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
