Sam Darnold

I worry Darnold will have the David Carr effect.  It's not that Carr was such a bad QB coming out of college, it's that he has been hit so much and put in such terrible situations that he never learned how to calm down and let the play develop of the field.  His timing got thrown off because half the time with the Texans his recievers were not running the right route or not the route he read from the defense.  Bad coaching and lack of talent kind of ruined his career with the Texans and when he went to other teams all the bad habits he learned from the Texans just followed him around and he was never able to get away from it.  I would have to see Darnold play for someone else before I would take a chance on him because he could have the same problems.

Yeah, remember when we signed Carr and when his internal 2 second clock went off he would just freak out and start scrambling out of the pocket even if it was flawless protection. It wasn't until late in his career that he finally started calming down.

Strategy #2:  If you cannot get Lawrence, do the following:

Trade back from (example) the #3 overall pick for an additional second rounder.  Draft the best LT, MLB, or DE available.

Let's say we trade back to #7 for a second rounder.  Lawrence is gone, Fields is gone,  Sewell (LT Oregon) is gone, Rousseau (DE Miami gone), Wade (CB, Ohio St) is gone., Surtain (CB, Bama) is also taken.

That leaves the Panthers with the following players (ranked in order I would take them):

1.  Parsons, MLB--Penn St.  (the next great MLB comes to Charlotte)

2. Lance, QB--N Dakota St

3. Farley, CB---Va Tech (I think he is the best CB in the draft)

4.  Leatherwood, LT--Bama  (IF Little somehow gets it, we probably go with another player)

4T.  Cosmi, LT--Texas

6.  Chase, WR LSU.  (Big play guy that Brady knows well-Samuel could be gone in 2021--this would be a huge upgrade).

7.  Wilson, DT  FSU (Maybe KK can be traded)

8.  Basham DE, Wake.  (Underrated--has the tools).

So if I went Parsons (MLB) with the pick, I would probably package the second rounders to move back up into the first to grab an offensive lineman who can start day 1---so I would consider Wyatt Davis (G OSU), Creed Humphrey (C, Okl), or another little OT (Walker Little, OT Stanford).  To me, if we build the OL and add a TE, we have made the QB better--so maybe the key is not to tank for Trevor, but to build the team around who and what we have.  Teddy won 5 games in New Orleans last season.  He had RBs, OL, TEs, and WRs.  Imagine that.

I use him as my example of the brain's reaction to trauma.  You cannot help it---the brain's primary job is to protect you--not win football games.

No LB's in the first ten picks of the draft, please. We need to get players at critical positions. We are obviously weak at LB but our other weaknesses are much more extreme and at much higher positions of value(franchise QB, LT, DE/EDGE/pass rusher, CB/S, etc).

There is no reason to trade back in the top 5 picks unless you are seriously not sold on the remaining QB options.

We better not trade back

No. Wouldn't even want him here for a late round pick. He has some talent, but like Josh Rosen, has absolutely none of what it takes to be an NFL QB as far as his mindset/competitiveness goes. Just out-tank the Jets and get Lawrence, and plan B/C are Fields/Lance. Don't waste any time on scrub busts like Darnold.

What the fug do you know about someone’s mindset/competitiveness?

Our cap space should be much better going forward and drafting our next QB on the rookie contract for the next few years should pair nicely with that. If we get one of the big 3 QBs and a new GM next year to build around him, Matt Rhule will have this franchise winning again sooner than we think.

Yep. I honestly really want to cut Teddy as well. People who say no "you're throwing him to the wolves right away" well Lance, Lawerence, and Fields are all better than Teddy rn and I would rather spend that 20 Million on a stud LT and resign Moton.

Sam Darnold is really talented, I hope the Jets don't ruin him.  In addition to being only 23, he didn't play quarterback until he was a junior in high school.  Some of these Josh Rosen comparisons and USC stigma comments are just so bad, please.  Darnold has shown way more promise, and has the ability to extend plays and improvise.  Very different players.

That said, would I take him over Trevor or Fields? No.  But let's not act like we can just get him for a late round pick.  We'd likely have to give up our high second rounder. Ja'Marr Chase/Sewell with Darnold would not be awful.  But it won't happen

Maybe after year 2. I like not rushing rookie QBs out on the field. Worked out well for Rodgers and Mahomes...
