Derrick Brown showing his true value

Well they set their protection up to the right, so they were sliding to their right side while big-on-big on the left. This allows the RB to pick up any green dog and go out on a route. More importantly is that the big-on-big side is Herbert's first read, obviously by the direction he looks as he's taking the snap.

I wouldn't chalk it up to say Derrick Brown is a legit DT already three games into his rookie season. For every one of these clips, I can find a shitty one from week 1 vs. the Raiders. He is a strong MFer though, look at this tweet:

Derrick Brown is starting to get double teams much more frequently.

Example:

Two Chargers offensive line players dedicated solely on Brown allowing another player, this time Obada, to win his one on one matchup and force Herbert into a bad throw.

Doesn't show on the stat sheet, but damn does having Brown in there make things easier.

you see Burns recognize that Obada beat his man and is going to sack/pressure the QB.. Burns then stops rushing and gives a little "bunny-hop" to deflect/intercept the pass if it were coming his way.. unfortunately, it was out of his range - but I love his football smarts and instincts :shades:

I believe the plan there on the initial snap was akin to a TE or RB chipping a DE to help out the T.  The G was a quick bit of help to get Brown stopped, then he looked to see if he could help elsewhere.  It's a good scheme, but it doesn't minimize the idea where the Chargers OC felt they needed to at least help on Brown.

He is a beast. I already worry about that second contract though. Our DTs either leave (Starr) or become useless (KK, Jenkins).

I find your post interesting because I feel the same way, not just about Panther DT's but the position in general. DT's seem to hit their peak early in their career and decline more sharply than other positions on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive Ends, Linebackers, and a fair number defensive backs are still playing at a high level at 30-32. I can't think of many Defensive Tackles currently in the league who are still DOMINANT as the approach 30. That doesn't mean they can't still be effective, but most of them  don't seem to be as explosive off the ball and as disruptive by their late 20's.

You always have exceptions. And, as long a NT maintains his strength he can be a force up the middle and in the run game. But, I'd always pick the DE over the DT if I had to decide which player was going to get the big contract (Unless it's an Aaron Donald, Randy White, Joe Greene, or John Randle of course)

Yep, I like Obada on the inside on passing downs. He seems to be much more effective there than at end.

Moving Obada inside could make a lot of sense, particularly in passing downs. He's a big guy and I can't remember which team did it a few years back but they completely converted one of their DEs to DT full time. It might have been the Giants when they had a murderer's row of DEs back in the Superb Owl days.

    • He's handing off play calling duties to fuging Brad Idzik as well so, either that mouth breather can run the playbook and Canales can grow as an all around head coach or it will be a horrible decision and both of them and BY can screw off. I'm fine with that as long as it isn't just another excuse for BY to get another year with another coach worthy of working around his limitations as a qb.
    • Not only for Andersen but the whole team, having not beat the Habs this season before tonite.  Shows them that they aren't jinxed.
    • I understand why people say things like it could be worse in relation to Tepper but it just doesn't jive for me. Are the optics bad? Yes. Would I want her to be the owner of my team? No. But I mean she's only been owner for a year and the Colts overall are a better run organization. As far as I know they've also never had the distinction of having the worst win percentage in all of professional sports either. Tepper has owned this team for 8 years and about the only thing that has been consistent has been the ability to continue to find different ways to achieve new lows. Even now people are saying things are different yada yada but we said these same things at certain points under Rhule Fitterer and Reich. I'm going to wait to see how the rubber meets the road this upcoming season before I make any strong conclusions about anything in relation to the longevity under this franchise going forward.
