Odd man out?

DJ Moore might be our most physically gifted WR. I feel like we are designing plays to get Samuel the ball and not doing the same for Moore who is just as dangerous with the ball in his hand. If we let DJ go, I have a feeling he will flourish in another system.

He would likely dominate. Two times this year Teddy had DJ heading to the end zone and he didn’t see him. He hits both those throws and you can had 150+ yards, 2 catches and 2 TDs to his stat line. He would look like an elite WR.

My take on this is that I think with no offseason and craptacular line play that leaves him scrambling on many plays, rare is the qb who would be able to consistently be productive with not two, but 3 different WR's half a season into joining the team. Give Teddy a more reliable pocket and time to throw and he may become better at locating DJ. If he does not, it may be that he's a 2 read and not a 3 read qb and that's one of his limitations. The ability to spread the ball around beyond a few primary options is one of the hallmarks of great qb play because of the pressure it puts on defenses.

If over time Teddy proves he his able to do this, get the ball into the hands of more than 2 options consistently, especially once CMC is back in the mix as a receiver, it should be a mark in his favor. If he proves unable, it's part of the argument for seeking a different long term option. Half an unprecedented season in, I'm not ready to pronounce Teddy to DJ a bust. The guy is still very much on pace to have 1k yards receiving this year. Let's not overreact to a few quiet games.

Curtis Samuel ain't even close to DJ Moore.

Imagine if Moore was lining up against the #3 corner every game and working inside.  No disrespect to Samuel, who has proven to be great in his role.  But he ain't DJ.  Obviously.

Brady tried that in the first few games and Moore somehow managed to drop everything. Now they are essentially just sending him on long developing routes every play, which is where he should be but then it falls back on Teddy+OL. Brady should really be utilizing him in the 15-20 yard range so teddy can hit him quicker and put him later in the progression or frankly just call his name more. Essentially, he only gets throws when his name was called in the huddle, which is a huge problem.

He was 11th in the league in receiving yards after Week 3. For someone who “managed to drop everything” he must’ve gotten lucky a lot to catch 8 passes for 120 yards against TB.

I think what annoys me most about Teddy, other than his abject refusal to throw to DJ, is that if it’s 3rd and anything more than 7, it’s a punt. He’s tossing an underneath route to Samuel or CMC that’s 3 yards past the line of scrimmage at most, or he’s taking off for 4 yards and it’s 4th and 3.

The drops stand out way more than the catches. If you remember the first few games they had him almost exclusively in the slot. Im not ragging on him or Samuel.

35 catches out of 62 targets is tough both on the coaches and him. He's historically about 6-8% better.

On 3rd downs with 7-9 yards to go...

23 plays (21 pass / 2 rush)

52.2% 1st down percentage

    • Fowler: Bucs 23, Panthers 16. Baker Mayfield only won a single game when he was an unimpressive Carolina starter, but somehow he’s 5-0 when playing AGAINST the Panthers. For the Panthers to pull off this upset, they’ll need to score at least in the mid-20s. With Tampa Bay relatively healthy following a mini-bye (and Mike Evans’ return is huge), it feels like this will be too tough a task. Kaye: Bucs 24, Panthers 20. The win-loss-win-loss streak comes to an end. It’s hard to trust the play-calling following the loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Panthers know what’s on the line, but they also knew last week, too. It’ll be close; I just have trouble trusting a positive outcome after a defeating one on the road. Zietlow: Panthers 38, Bucs 35. This prediction goes against conventional wisdom, but then again, conventional wisdom doesn’t seem to apply to these Panthers. This group, after all, has yet to lose back-to-back contests since Weeks 1 and 2. I think they win this one to make Week 18 interesting — and yes, that’s even with motivated Baker Mayfield and future Hall of Famer Mike Evans in good form. Why not?
    • Sam developed into a different player after he mostly sat for a year and learned a ton by being in that QB room under Shannahan in San Francisco.  Then he went to the Vikings who have a poo load of talent and another genius level offensive mind at HC in Kevin O Connel. I think they genuinely built up his confidence in a way he never did in New York or Charlotte.  He would not have been the same player if he stayed here IMO. Especially if he had been involved in that disaster season with Frank Reich in 2023, that might have cooked his confidence for good.  I guess you could argue we wouldn't have been that bad if we also kept cmc and dj i guess.
    • Willis was impressive last night given the circumstances. GB and SF seem to just have it figured out as far as QB goes.   It's frustrating, but I enjoy seeing our old players find success elsewhere.
