Article: Matt Rhule on the rise in Carolina

For most coaches who see the G.M. fired and a new one hired, it’s a bad sign. For Panthers coach Matt Rhule, it’s a positive development.

As one league source explained it to PFT, the firing of Panthers G.M. Marty Hurneymeans that Rhule will essentially be running the show in Carolina, once the dust settles on the hiring of a new G.M.

It could happen as a practical matter, or it could be made more official. The new G.M. may report to Rhule; the new G.M. may report to owner David Tepper. Regardless, the new G.M. won’t be someone who comes in with a short list of preferred coaching hires and bides his time until the time comes to move out Rhule and hire someone else.

This makes Rhule a key player in the search for a new G.M., and it gives Rhule plenty of power moving forward.

It should be no surprise. The curve-blowing contract that Tepper gave to Rhule in early 2020 says it all. Rhule won’t have to worry about the new G.M. firing the coach. And the new G.M. surely won’t get the job without Rhule’s agreement.

Although the Panthers could technically give the new G.M. final say over the draft or the roster (even if Rhule will actually be making those calls), any arrangement that doesn’t entail a G.M. contract with those powers will make it harder to hire a replacement who currently has a contract with another team.

Teams from time to time have tried to circumvent the spirit of the rule by creating a disconnect between the contract and the reality for the G.M., and it rarely becomes an issue. Tepper, who angered other owners by paying an entry-level coach so much money, may decide to push the envelope in order to get the G.M. he wants.

Org chart:

                               Tepper

Rhule < > New Guy (GM)

                          Everyone Else

Rhule and the New Guy will be on the same level -- both direct reports of Tepper.

Rhule & New Guy will effectively be a joint/equal-partnership and Tepper's expectation will be for them to solve problems and make plans together.

That may be the plan but in the case of disagreements someone has final say and it won't likely be Tepper. If it is Rhule good luck on finding experienced GMs that want to be the coach's lackey.

100% it will be Tepper...

...he explicitly said so the day Hurndog was canned.

Let's say the same thing happens this year and Rhule wants to move back and the new GM wants a QB or left tackle and to stay put. Tepper can say he will break ties but whoever he picks wins that battle and will be in charge of the draft or roster. The old let's be friends and get along concept is fine in theory but hard in practice. He isn't going to want to referee decisions.

I think the reason Hurney was retained was because they couldn't get one of their GM candidates to agree to the terms of the new GM position - that basically Rhule was in charge of buying his own groceries.

No young, aspiring GM wants to sign up for that - they want to run their own franchise.

We'll see how they fare this time round.

I'm throwing this out there because I'm surprised I haven't seen this mentioned on the board yet. Any chance Rhule becomes one of those GM/HC's?

No.

He may end up being be the guy that has ultimate say, but these days doing both is just too big a job to handle (and Rhule has said as much).

    • You honestly think Tampa would have traded down with a division rival so their rival could land a “generational player” at a massive position of need for TB?   bruh
    • Ya'll better quit throwing shots at Zod. He'll come in here and ban everybody. I had a friend @prosource who was banned in 2015 because he said some very minor things about Zod being an ass to the posters on the main forum after starting the All-Pro one. He said he felt like another level is cool, but don't punch down on people that don't want All-Pro. (He did say that it wasn't going to last long anyways.🤔) I distinctly remember him calling and being like "dude, I got banned, my profile says I don't have access to the Huddle!") I feel like once Tepper came in and cut off all unofficial access to the team, Zod was going to be around less. The All-Pro board had really good photos, even in game stuff, and I remember seeing him behind a little fenced in area at Wofford for non team sanctioned press/photographers after Tepper bought the team. I knew then his ego wouldn't allow him to continue with past fervency and effort with that reduction in access. Dude was literally in the locker room when JR was owner.  I came over in 2011 immediately after finding out this place existed. I was super involved with the Charlotte forum, and fell off after its demise. I will never forget arguing Pep over Ryan Sims on that forum! Who is Ryan Sims some of you may ask? My answer is exactly!
    • And not see him running free. Because has been free a lot more than he gets credit for.    Now what XL does with that when he does see the ball, is on him.
