Young joined a loaded defensive line while Jeremy Chinn joined what many experts thought would be one of the worst defenses in the league.

Who had more of an impact?

This is a logical and analytical way to think.

Unfortunately, you're counting on the Associated Press to think this way.  Journalists.  It's just not happening.

In an interesting bit of symmetry, when Luke Kuechly won DROY in 2012, our defense was ranked 18th in scoring defense and yards surrendered.  In 2020, when Jeremy Chinn probably should have won it, our defense was ranked 18th in scoring and yards surrendered.

Nothing against Young but I just expected more based on his draft position and hype. Julius Peppers, another 2nd overall pick DE, rookie season blew Young's season out of the water. Peppers only played 12 games before being suspended.

If Young did what he did this season on a defensive line that didn't already have 4 other first rounders on it I would have been more impressed.
