I keep seeing people misquote the cap figures and impacts for Watson, Teddy, CMC, Stafford, etc. Here is a screenshot guide from Overthecap for each of these oft referenced players. 

Things to keep in mind: THE PRORATED SIGNING BONUS MONEY NEVER LEAVES THE INITIAL TEAM. This does not count as cap hit for the team these players are traded to.  All other remaining guaranteed money and bonus money(roster/workout/etc) IS TRANSFERED to the new team.

I can add more players to this list upon request.

Deshaun Watson

With that last image, I can't believe a word of this!!!  Nah, thank for the explanation--I am one of those who were confused about this--still am (slow learner) but this helps.

Thanks for explaining that. I had it differently in my mind and it does change some of my thinking. 

I stand corrected. The rules of the salary cap are byzantine and incredibly malleable.

The one good thing I can say about Watson's contract is that it actually gets better toward the end instead of worse.  2022 and 2023 are rough.  After 2023 however, it becomes a manageable number, and very easy to simply cut if needed.

To me, if we get Watson the "contender" window starts creaking open.  I don't want to restructure everyone under the sun, but think we see a few moves to give us more space and sign help for now instead of the "slow" rebuild.  Watson included in that. Hopefully we're letting his agent know that if he comes to the Panthers, he'll be taken care of contract wise.

I see a lot of theory but we need to be mindful of the actual financial impacts, as well. Like....trading CMC would absolutely nuke our cap.

The terms--would the panthers simply redo the Houston contract or do they have to honor it?  I suppose that has to be a mutual agreement, but I was curious as to what normally happens.  The reason?  The Texans got a good deal on the front end, and we would have to pay him for the "meat" of the contract. I just don't know what the norm is (thinking cap and possible extension)
