The wrath of Rhule

Apparently our head coach, while generally a nice guy, isn't always an easy man to work for...or play for šŸ˜†

Pretty good read in The Athletic (subscription required)

After joining Matt Rhule’s Baylor staff from Rice, Frank Okam was fired up about making the jump to a Power 5 program. Then the first game happened, and Okam wondered if his might be a short stint in Waco.

After Okam’s defensive line had a choppy performance in the 2018 opener against Abilene Christian, the Bears’ first-year assistant called his girlfriend to let her know he’d endured the wrath of Rhule.

ā€œThe headsets were crazy and there was a lot of yelling going back and forth. And coach Rhule in frustration said, ā€˜Frank, this might be your last game here,ā€™ā€ Okam said last week. ā€œSo I called her after the game. I was like, ā€˜Hey, I think I might be fired from Baylor. So I’m not sure, I’m gonna show up to work tomorrow and see what happens, see if they’ll let me in the building.ā€™ā€

Okam’s job was safe: A calmer Rhule explained the following day he was just trying to get the most out of him and his players. But it was a bit of a system shock for Okam...

First few games in clemson in 1995 they let you bring scanners into the game.Ā

This was a tradition in NASCAR at the time so they thought they could do it for the NFL. The NFL banned this almost immediately for obvious reasons, but for a couple games you could do it and listen to the coaches.

One of the guys besides me let me listen to his headphones. I was ten.Ā

It was nothing but profanities. No strategy, no plays, just fug THAT fugER IN THE fuging ASS

I was not allowed to listen to it again

The article includes similar feedback from players.

There was chatter out of the Senior Bowl about Rhule yelling at his coaches just as much as he did the players. Sounds like that was legit.

Ā

You can get away with riding your team hard as long as they know at the end of the day you give a poo about them and have their best interests at heart. If they don't believe that, then you'll have a revolving door of people jumping ship as soon as they can.

When I started playing pee wee football, I learned a lot of new and interesting words.

My mom wasn't too happy about that but the coach was my best friend's dad.

They hired Rhule to turn this into a winning franchise. This is how he is doing it. Apparently, this is how he has done it at Baylor and Temple.Ā

If he gets the same results here, then we have nothing to complain or worry about. This is how he builds a team. Rivera built his differently and folks will have to get accustomed to the new way or move on.

It will take time to get to the prime spot in this arc, but I think we're seeing growth here. This wasn't going to be an overnight fix, although I can't help but think had CMC been healthy, we'd have had four to five more wins over the season.

Give it time.

Ask Belichick.

    • Just another 1st round QB that neverĀ paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.Ā  4Ā  6Ā  5Ā  4Ā  6Ā  4Ā  15Ā  2Ā  9Ā  4Ā  3Ā  5Ā  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5Ā  1Ā  4Ā  1Ā  3Ā  1Ā  1Ā  2Ā  3Ā  4Ā  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2ndĀ rounders, 3Ā are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings.Ā Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding thatĀ championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency. Ā
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox inĀ 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.Ā  Ā  I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.Ā
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.Ā
