PFF Renner: The Biggest Draft Mistake For Each Team in the Past 5 Years

This comes as absolutely no surprise:

Marty Hurney wasn’t fired for his draft record, as he did fine in early rounds. It was Rounds 3-plus where they simply have struggled to find competency. Arguably the best one of the bunch has been Corn Elder, who earned a 68.5 grade this season on 411 snaps as a slot corner. If that’s your biggest mistake, though, it’s been a solid span of drafts.

I’d agree with this mostly but the jury is still out on Haynes, Miller (who opted out), and Carter Jr was solid in more playing time this year. Yes nobody after the 2nd round has been great and Marty was terrible in his second tenure at least the first time around he had a few late round gems.

Go take a look for yourself. I don’t think there’s been a worse drafting team over the span. D.K. Metcalf in 2019 and landing Chris Carson in the seventh are really the only saving graces for what’s been a messy five years of picks. It's almost incomprehensible after how dominantly the Seahawks drafted from 2010-2012.

Not to defend Marty because he's basically correct, but it's kinda hard to take this seriously given that the guy writing it doesn't seem to know Marty didn't do all the drafting of the past five years, and in fact didn't draft the particular player he cites as an example.

Hindsight is always 2020 and it would've been nothing short of baffling at the time, but our biggest mistake knowing what we know now is drafting Christian McCaffrey instead of Patrick Mahomes and that's also true for the other 7 teams that were ahead of us in that draft.

Newton still had what, four years left on his contract at that point and hadn't started getting injured.

If we'd have drafted Mahomes (or any quarterback) while Newton still had four years left on his deal people would have gone apesh-t.

Yeah. I’ve said this before he’s my fav player outside of the panthers to watch but look what happened when his oline gets injured and they play backups. Not saying he wouldn’t still be good, he would be, but he would not be putting up these numbers on different orgs or going to the playoffs every year. Situations (teams) matter and how you build around your qb. KC was the perfect spot for him.
