Breer on why teams may be cautious about drafting QBs high (and a Bridgewater nugget)

Don't get Breer's thinking on Watson happening "suddenly and quietly".  Sure, the deal will be agreed to suddenly, but it's been anything but sudden and quiet.  If the Texans don't have Plan A, B, C, D, etc. thought of by now, that organization truly is more worthless than what it's shown.

Drafting QBs

In discussing teams drafting QBs high, with none of the top four guys eligible for the Senior Bowl, no combine, and no private workouts, teams will get to see Wilson, Fields, and Lance throw live one time -- the pro day. Drafting a quarterback in the top 10 essentially ties the GM and coach's jobs to that QB. Will GMs be comfortable betting their jobs on a guy they've seen throw live one time?

He also feels teams are over analyzing Fields and that in the coming weeks Fields might once again jump Wilson on some team's draft board.

Like I have screamed from the beginning, we should stay at 8 and see who falls.  No doubt Lance will be there and maybe even Wilson or Fields as well.

The Huddle will crash forever if we actually woke up to news of a Watson trade.

I have a bottle of champagne cooling in the pantry--and I have a suicide note for my wife and kids in the safe---both anticipating the Watson news.

(kidding--I would like Watson, but the expected cost is turning me away from it)  I would rather be the team that drafts and develops its QB of the future. )

From the typical fan who said that a lot of teams are going to regret drafting Wilson......🤣

Except that's not what he said...

Breer said that as far as the final outcome, i.e. whether he's traded, sits or decides to play, nobody knows what will happen.

He believes however that if the outcome is him being traded, it will happen quickly and suddenly.

A similar sentiment was posted in one of his prior MMQB columns.

Yeah I'd prefer a rookie (Fields ideally) but I'm not adamantly against going for Watson, just depends on the price. If we do make the trade, even if we pay way more than I'd like, I'd still be absolutely pumped and excited for the future having an elite QB here and I'd just have to hope Rhule and Fits can make it work to build around him with less assets. Either way the meltdown here on both sides would be a sight to see...

    • Sure, but if that happens, the draft pick will look even worse for the Falcons, as instead of getting them a player that could win now, they took someone who ran off their prize FA QB after 3 years and now looks like they may be a bust. Penix was one of the more polished QB's in the draft and would have probably been a rookie starter if taken by someone with an uncertain starting QB, if he's not ready to step in and play well in year 3, then it's probably not going to work out.
