Why Tommy Stevens will be the #3 QB

I know Tommy Stevens played for Joe Brady in New Orleans.  But Stevens did virtually nothing as a college QB.  And his NFL draft profile includes weaknesses such as

  • Dual-threat who lacks passing profile of an NFL quarterback
  • Will air-mail throws over the receiver's head
  • Lacks field vision to recognize trouble
  • Anticipation is below average as a passer

I can't see why the Panthers would keep this guy on the roster as a QB ?

He didn’t play for Brady at NO. He was drafted last year by the Saints in the late rounds because they found out we were interested in bringing him in as an undrafted rookie. He was cut because it’s a waste to have two guys like that on a roster. We signed him pretty quickly once he was cut.

Sammy, PJ, and Tommy make a good corps. All are good scramblers. Tommy is a good swiss army knife guy that gives you a few options and opens the door for some creativity. You could legitimately put him on the same field as Sammy or PJ when/if he fills in and all he would do is make the defense confused.

Grier, on the other hand, is a nice guy. He's well liked, but really offers not much more than that. He's going to be heading somewhere else.

The Riot Report on the Panthers final three QB'S

(3): Sam Darnold, PJ Walker and Tommy Stevens

You’ll begin to see a pattern with a lot of these position groups as the Panthers Rhule/Fitterer regime begins to move on from the Hurney Era – I expect them to move on from 2019 third-round pick Will Grier in favor of their version of Taysom Hill in Tommy Stevens. Rhule is clearly a big believer in position flexibility, so having Stevens, who can double as the emergency QB and backup TE among other spots, seems more likely than keeping Grier, who may end up in Washington like so many other QBs of a bygone era.

If he can't displace Grier or Walker, he has no business playing QB.  Straight up.

I hate to say it, but this kinda reeks of a Hurney move.  Armanti Edwards anyone?

It was a Hurney move.

He was picked up for nothing and can be cut in a second and not owed a penny. Who cares?

Agree with him or not thanks to MHS for being one of the few regular thoughtful contributors.

Just try to throw some topics out there to get us through May and June.  Proved to be too much for Trainwreck to handle, bless his heart.

He's wearing a Panthers jersey now, so good luck to him. Hope he lives up to the potential.

Not a lot of info on him out there, but there isn't a whole lot of talent between him and being in the QB room during the regular season. Put simply, it's not like the other guys behind Darnold have a lot going for them, and maybe not even much at the QB1 position if he can't be rejuvenated.

If Darnold doesn't pan out, that is easily the worst assembly of QB's in the NFL currently.

Tommy Stevens was drafted last year (2020 draft) so his NFL career never overlapped with Joe Brady’s in New Orleans. Brady was last working for the Saints in 2018.

My bad - both Brady and Stevens were at Penn State in 2015.   Brady as a graduate assistant.  Stevens as a Freshman.

Not sure if they knew each other then.

Umm, I think Brady was with Penn State when Stevens was there before transferring to Miss St--then Brady was with New Orleans when Stevens was there.

This is getting deep.

Do we have a pattern here?

I don't think it matter if PJ, Will or Stevens or the 2nd or 3rd stringers. If they see significant time, we're gonna be just as fuged. The only thing that will change is the position we are getting fuged in.

Which is why we may as well have a dual threat QB who can serve in other ways.  At least we are getting something out the roster spot that we are reserving to lose games should our QB1 go down.
