Film Study: Derrick Brown.

People forget how good vintage Kris Jenkins was. Had he not struggled with injuries and consistency, he would have been considered an elite player at that position.

Also, playing next to a freak like Peppers didn't exactly do wonders for his spotlight either.

In his prime he was considered one of if not the best DT in the league. His prime was just short lived.

That line was so fuging good. We have a promising group of players on our DL here now but I am not sure we will ever eclipse how good that group was.

RAS also has a "size" portion of it, which can skew it against players that aren't in the "ideal" category.

It definitely can highlight guys that are elite athletes. If you look at the Panthers historic RAS scores, a large portion of our elite players are in that Elite to Above Average category.

Brown will never be a guy like Donald or Cox or Jenkins. But he can blow people off the line, create for our other pass rushers and generally disrupt plays. That is where his value is.

He just needs to become a more sure tackler and work on his array of pass rush moves. If he can smooth out the rough edges, he can be an 8-10 year starter for us.

Yeah some of the best players on our team right now have 8+ RAS scores with some at 9.99 like Chinn and Burns. Cmc had a 8+ score. I think he just got dinged because of his size like you said. But everything else was elite.

Cam had a 10.00. Lol probably the most elite athlete to ever play the qb position

Chinn and Burns are absolute freaks. I like what the staff is doing by combining RAS scores with tape. Like The Golden Calf of Bristol had a 9+ but he’s obviously terrible. So you have to match the athleticism with what they do on the field.

I like Derrick a lot but I think his ceiling is just very good. Which is totally fine. Don’t see him ever getting into the Donald, Suh category.

No, those guys were freaks. Brown isn't likely to be that guy. But, that doesn't matter. He makes everyone around him better and that is important, if underappreciated.

Yeah I see him similar to Star. And we all know what happened when Star left for Buffalo.

In 2019 we were terrible up the middle getting gashed for big runs straight up the middle. In 2020 we end up more solid against the run. Biggest difference- Brown. It sure wasn't Whitehead.

How many passing downs did we rush 3 meaning Brown was doubled if not triple teamed. Even when we lined him up in the A gap he was mostly doubled. He played well outside of the penalties which you live with if you start a rookie. With better interior help and better pass rushers we have the talent to be aggressive and allow Brown to get more 1 on 1 matchups where is he tough to block. Snow just has to let the cats hunt this year and be aggressive and give up the prevent defense of last year.

I think we will see them be more aggressive with a far more athletic secondary and a hopefully improved LB corps.

I think his ceiling is even higher than Star because he is a more legit threat to rush the passer.

Yeah the hope was Star would become a threat as a pass rusher because he had some moves and showed off some ability in college. That never happened. I’m hopeful brown will become that threat but I feel like they were similar in college in that respect.

If he can clog the middle and push the pocket and get pressure I'm not particularly concerned with sack numbers. Though that's always great.

If he can collapse the pocket up the middle it keeps QBs from stepping up to avoid the rush. He may still not get big numbers but the ends sure will.

Jenkins ran into the problem of getting fat. Even fat Jenkins could rush the passer, and on one play he burst into the pocket to destroy the QB, with no one even touching him once he got through, his ACL exploded from his sheer weight. Jenkins was so tough that he had a knee brace put on and continued to play the game with a torn ACL. Granted he collapsed a few played later screaming in pain and grabbing his knee, but still he was a baddass. Jenkins also ran into the problem of his back deteriorating from being fat and rushing the passer like a wildman. Jenkins could often time the snap perfectly and had no wasted motion with his pass rushing moves. One of my favorite Jenkins plays was against the Cowboy in the playoffs when Jenkins slapped the helmet of a cowboys player to stun him, and you could hear the slap from the stands. It didn't cause a sack or anything, but it occurred to me that 1.) Jenkins could kill someone with a slap, and 2.) his hand must have been really hurting and he was laughing about it. Jenkins was one of the best. Even after he went to the Jets he would tell Panthers fans in the crowd "YOU KNOW YOU GUYS STILL NEED ME!" and he was right.

I vividly remember Jenkins because he played the game at the highest level. I can see him playing in my mind right now. Not to take anything away from Brown, but he has room to improve headed into his second season. I just would rather fans held off on the whole idea of Brown becoming better than Jenkins. If Brown becomes as good as Jenkins then we will have the best d-line in football, but Brown has a ways to go. Even Brown admitted he was rusty last season from being away from football too long with COVID and that he needed to work on his fundamentals. Give Brown some time.

    • Here are more fun facts about Peyton Manning's rookie season: Peyton ranked 3rd in total passing yards, 5th in passing touchdowns, 4th in 1st-down completions, 11th in TD%, and 8th in completions that were 20 yards or more.  Now let's look at how Bryce compared to his peers: 20th in total passing yards, 28th in passing TDs, 21st in 1st-down completions, 31st in TD%, and 27th in completions that were 20 yards or more.  To put it mildly, Peyton showed plenty of flashes as a franchise quarterback. Bryce? Not so much, almost none at all, as a matter of fact. Oh, and Peyton is legit 6'4", literally head and shoulders above Bryce. I sometimes wonder if Bryce defenders are sentient at all.
