You mean to tell me that a crusty old defensive coordinator from some low rank conference college program can take a bunch of rookies and use college concepts to create a defense that confuses a NFL HOF QB?

Next you'll tell me that pigs can fly.

What about pigskins after being launched from Sammy D’s throwing arm?

Looking at many of the plays it looked like our guys were just as confused as the other team.  Look at how many guys are just standing around as the offensive players run their routes. Many aggressive defenses teach players that if you don't have someone you are responsible for because of how they line up then you delay blitz and find a crease to bring pressure.  This was a prevent defense with guys dropping deep and giving up the underneath stuff. Death by a thousand cuts. Look at how much pressure we got rushing three. I pray we rush 4 and 5 on every play like Baltimore and Pittsburgh who both press receivers off the line and  confuse the coverage lining up 7 or even 8 close to the line. Employing those exotic blitzes that seem so effective against us.  We need a tough physical aggressive defense not a gimmicky confusing college scheme that has been figured out I am sure. OCs have plenty of film to watch.

You can only work with what you have.   Do you really think they could have installed exotic blitzes with half the defense rookies and the other half 1 year starters?  Good luck with that.  That college defense kept the losses from being complete blowouts.

Last year is ancient history. While I surely have a different take, what is important is that we look a whole lot different this year. We have more talent and experience so now we need those exotic blitzes  or is that still too hard??

Depends in how fast Horn gets to speed. Can Horn, AJ and Jackson play press this year? If not we will be doing the cover 3 formations until they can.

I'm OK with the 3 deep safeties when it is relevant and to mix things up, but I don't want us to have to rely on it exclusively like last year.

There is a reason no one else runs 3 high safeties and keeps everyone deep rushing 3 as their main scheme.. I have seen it used as a change up or when in prevent mode but as Warner said, no one runs it. Why??  Because it isn't a legitimate NFL defense and is easily exploited.

Exactly! I harped on it all last season and we'd better be more aggressive this year. Every game looked like Snow was playing a turned-based strategy game while the opposing offenses were doing real-time games.

Yes, Whitehead sucked epically out there, but every play there were people out of position or without clearcut assignments. Darnold could lob 50 TDs this year, but if the concepts on defense don't improve mightily, then we will struggle to win five again.

Played like a bunch of old ladies last year. <SMH>

No the issue wasn't that it was too hard according to reports, it was that it was too much to expect in the early going last year by all accounts.  If you noticed as the season went on they began to incorporate some blitz packages.   This season expect things to be different in that regard.   Other than that I do not have a clue what they are going to do this season.

    • I disagree. For better or worse Bryce likes to throw floaters to predetermined areas regardless of what the reciever is doing and bringing those down is XL's bag. I wanted Ladd but I think this was right call. Burners and slot recievers are a dime a dozen but legit jump ball specialists are not.
