I'd say David Moore is ass close to a lock as you can get without actually being one, which only leaves 1 WR in this scenario. I'd say Saunders. He plays ST, and is a back up RB. I haven't seen poo out of Bayless and Zylstra in the preseason games, so Kirkwood may actually have a shot if we keep 7.

David Moore is a lock because of his contract.  He's nothing special and I suspect that he'll be the #5 guy once Shi Smith gets his NFL trial by fire games under his belt.  Right now he's got that #4 WR spot over the rookie.  Kirkwood makes no sense to keep, there's zero cap hit and we have younger guys with more potential to groom.  Bayless can be stashed on the PS, nobody is clamoring for his services.

The tough one is Zylstra.  He can return kicks and has a knack for getting open.  USUALLY he has reliable hands, but Friday night he had butter fingers.  He's 50/50 to make the last WR spot and that is if they don't reserve the #6 position for Cannon.

yeah, the lack of ANY reliable camp coverage makes it tough to call. Zylstra looked Ok last year, but IMO has all but disappeared since. I think its a moot point anyway since we very likely only keep 6. Also, I confused Saunders and Cannon. Cannon is the WR/RB/ST guy I meant to say made the team.

FWIW (not much until tomorrow), I just checked and Kirkwood is listed above Bayless and Zylstra on the depth chart.

Saunders goes to the PS.  He got a lot of looks with the backups, but is going to be just a developmental guy.  No need to burn a roster spot on the 53 man squad for that.  It sounds like Rhule is really high on Cannon, but what spot does he take, a RB or WR?  If we don't bring in a FB, he can be the #4 RB, but if we do pick up a FB then we will not carry five (RB/FB).  If that does happen, you would think a WR spot has to be dropped.

I imagine some cuts will come later this afternoon...the easy decisions.  The bubble cuts will be tomorrow.

    • Yup. Hopefully  Brandon adds some muscle this off-season but he'll probably be resting his shoulder for a while so I doubt it. Miles should probably be replaced but I don't think we find a better 4th option to be honest. So is it better to add depth along side williams and Coby or try to upgrade the 4/5 . I think adding depth will probably be more beneficial than trying to upgrade starters and bank on Brandon and Kons continuing development. I really don't think they are going to make the playoffs unfortunately. I think the big hole they put themselves in has exhausted them. They've been amazing since January 1 but I think it's come at a cost and their legs are gone.
    • The issue is the predictability of it all in a Bryce Young led offense. In 4th down attempts the Jets were at 41 and we were at 40. And we were 4th in conversation %. We were 25th in the league in 3rd down conversion because we faced so many 3rd and longs in part due to playcalling on 1st and 2nd down but more largely due to the limitations that cannot be overcome.  And people want us to spend another 1st rounder on WR as if it is going to magically give Bryce physical talent he will never possess. It's a shame we cut off our own nose just to put ourselves in this frustrating predicament.
