The guy is VERY raw. I know we all like to watch highlights of him knocking defenders on their ass, but he does a lot of lunging with his upper body. Technique needs a lot of refining before I’m comfortable with him starting.

I wanted him to start but there must be something they’re seeing in practice that they don’t think he’s ready. But he should at least be on the active roster for depth

Andrew Norwell was inactive for the first half of the season too until the coaching staff realized he was their best left guard and only then after multiple injuries

So what you're saying is, the more things change the more they stay the same, since that was a different owner, different GM, and different coaching staff, but we're still seeing dubious OL decisions?

Because he doesn't throw every rookie ever into the lineup?

Horn is going to start, Marshall is (essentially) going to start. Tremble is going to see major minutes. Hubbard is apparently returning Kicks and first man off the bench at RB. Taylor and Nixon will rotate in on defence.

How much more do you want?

Get back to me on that after the third or 4th time Quinnen Williams forklifts one of our interior OL.

The oline is potential disaster waiting to happen. As always I'm hoping for the best but not expecting miracles with this group. If they can keep Sam relatively clean against the Jets I'll feel better moving forward but as of now our approach has not inspired confidence and that's justified. I get you are all in on giving this staff the benefit of the doubt but you still have to acknowledge reality.

I am acknowledging reality that they don't think an overweight 6th round pick is ready to start the season opener, yeah.

If he's any good he'll work his way into the lineup - that's how Rhule operates.

Michael Jordan our other reserve Guard is inactive also- That leaves only Tecklenburg, Scott, and Christensen as our backup OL today since Daley is in for Miller.

I can't imagine Jordan knows the playbook at this point. That's a long term investment - again you might see him by midseason if the Oline is as bad as many fear.

Simple.

I want to see the players who looked the best in preseason and workouts on the field or AT least on the active gameday roster instead of seeing eerily similar rookie reticence to the previous regime. Letting the very first defender taken in the draft start when you were awful at his position last year is not exactly hanging your nards out there, neither is letting a talented 2nd rounder that many had projected in the first be your third receiver, nor giving significant minutes to a 3rd rounder at a position you got little out of last season.

The OL we will be starting with is, barring Moton, old, bad, and has no future upside. We have OL rookies that looked promising up to this point. They might be far from perfect, but try to make the argument it should be obvious the guys we're putting out there will be better. They might be, but if they are awful today, my question will be, could the rookie who showed physical prowess and great potential in the preseason really have been that much worse?

Against the Jets?

That's how much more I want. Don't dip your balls only halfway in and try to tell me you're getting your bellybutton wet. Either you've got a five year plan and you're taking chances and changing things up or you're not. Overall I like Rhule's approach. This stuff I'm dubious about.

To be fair, Rivera was just bad at evaluations in general.

I've said before I don't have a problem with taking time to ease lower round / undrafted rookies into the pros. You just have to be able to properly judge when they're ready.

I know I said it in the draft thread but I wasn’t expecting him to do well this year. I think he had a better preseason than I expected but he hadn’t gone against the top/1st team DL yet. I do think the Huddle is putting him on a pedestal he hasn’t earned yet. I hope he keeps working hard but highlight videos of him against CBs hasn’t made me think he’s ready to start. I think one reason people love him so much is because Elflein and Miller, to a lesser degree, are bottom of the NFL starters. If we had decent guards, no one would say boo if he’s inactive.

That said, inactivating Brown and Jordan leaves me very worried if there’s an injury. Tecklenberg is dookie.

Agreed. We are grasping at straws to give us hope because with the projected starters, there is little hope.

Normally, those lower round guys are bottom of the roster churn or long term developmental gambles. We just happen to be in a case where we kind of need those guys due to lack of quality depth or just general depth.

We aren't the normal scenario.

That's not necessarily a bad thing.

If that's the case, it often means you're drafting well.

So what you're saying is, in positions where the rookie is obviously better than the veteran incumbent, the rookie is starting?

Gotcha.
