The Stephon Gilmore trade is even more interesting then I first realized. He has position flexibility to play free safety, a position we are really weak at. Maybe he doesn’t play free safety this year with Jaycee out, but next year with Jaycee back I think that it could be a real possibility. Also, I think there’s a strong chance we bring Donte back, Frittergoat clearly loves his DBs.

CB-Donte

CB-Jaycee

Slot- Henderson(or Bouye if he resigns)

FS- Gilmore

SS- Chinn

+ Keith Taylor as a really strong backup option

That lineup is the best DB group in the league with zero doubt. Plus we finally get a real FS in the first time in 10 years.

Bouye is already under contract next season.  Donte is not.

I'd be very surprised if Gilmore would sign to play safety.  He can get big money to play corner, really big money.  If Henderson plays up to his draft position, it will be an amazing collection of corners, something where years from now will look back and say they were all on the same team one year.

This year or if we keep Gilmore Next season, I see zero reason to move him to FS.

he would be the best CB on the team.   Why wouldn’t you play the best CB at CB?

Personally I think he’s the best DB in the league, he’s played FS in New England. And you can make the argument that the differential in talent between Gilmore and Burris is far greater then the talent difference between him and Jaycee. I understand your point but I think there could be some real value in even a part time role at FS.

I mean if you read my post I mentioned both Donte needing to be resigned. I doubt he’s signing any sort of small contract to play either, I’m just making the point that due to our surplus of CB talent and our utter lack of FS talent he could be more impactful personnel wise at FS.

I think the gap between Gilmore and every corner here is pretty big.   I’d rather just go find a S if we kept Gilmore around.

The only way we keep all 6 is if one of them accepts a FS role. Won't be Jaycee or Gilmore, they're CB 1 and 2.

Now between the other 4, my first guess would be CJ Henderson. Donte is too good of a CB to risk a change of position. Bouye and Taylor are ridiculous CB depth.

If donte was bigger I’d say love him around like arz does budda baker, but with his size I’m not sure taking on blockers etc is going to yield a healthy donte who already has some health issues at times

So what's going on in Arizona now 👀

Agreed and it could allow him to lengthen his career significantly. Charles Woodson was very successful making that transition.

I see us stacking up on quality CBs and in this league you never have enough quality CBs.

I like it and hopefully we'll reap the benefits soon.

I'd rather see the team start stacking up on quality Oline instead. Quality CBs don't mean squat if the offense doesn't score or even stay on the field long enough for the defense to get a break.

    • This 1000%.  Hey who wants to sign with the guy that couldn't even get his client the guaranteed contract of a 3rd round pick?  Lmao
    • I don't think it's any weird or unique clause, it's the offset language, same thing so many contract disputes are over. It just means that including it, if a player is cut and then signed by another team, the original team would be able to subtract how much they're getting paid by the new team from what they still owe him on their guaranteed money. For example, it's why Russell Wilson signed for the minimum last year with the Steelers as that was included in his Denver contract.  So if he signed with the Steelers for $1 million, he'd get $1 million less from the Broncos, if it was $2 million, he'd get $2 million less, basically he couldn't make any more money than he was already going to make, so you sign for the minimum to not take unnecessary cap room from your new team while giving extra cap room to your old one. The problem with trying to include it in rookie deals is that a team trying to include it, it says they think they don't really believe the player will make it 4 years with the team before they cut them.  And this usually comes up with one or two rookies in most seasons, the difference is it's usually handled much more quietly and not as public and ugly as this one. The other difference is that it's happening with the Bengals, which I believe I saw are one of the few (or only?) team that doesn't have protections for rookies in rookie and mini camps to be able to participate even if they haven't signed their contract yet.  The other teams have injury protections that allow them to still play, but the Bengals do not, which is also why this one is so public and ugly, as most the time this happens, the rookie is still participating in the rookie and subsequent mini camps, giving them more time to get the contract done before training camp when they'd then hold out.
