The way this played out with Donte, especially what happened as of late, reminds me a lot of what happened with Whitehead last season.

They talked him up, named him a captain, he ends up getting picked on in games, suddenly has a mystery injury pop up and gets demoted/benched, or in this case, IR'd.

The painful truth is that the team has an absolutely stacked CB room and in order for DJack to stay here he's going to have to do it on a team friendly deal.

He was on the upswing, a willing tackler in space that was making plays on the ball. He had a rough outing though the last couple of weeks, getting burnt and showing immaturity despite being one of the older guys in the locker room. That will hopefully allow the team some negotiating room.

They also get to see just how good that depth is. Would it be better to bring back Gilmore instead to play across from Horn with Bouye in the slot while backed up by Henderson, Taylor, and Hartsfield? Can STO3 make a play on a role on the team next year? It'll be an interesting 5 game run to close out, as that last wildcard spot is wide open still.

Agreed, until the last 2 weeks.  And when it went sour, it went sour quick.

Regarding Jackson's problems over the past few weeks, Joe Person quotes Matt Rhule as saying bad things happened because the team's safeties "left Jackson out to dry".

While i'm sure its possible, I trust zero things Matt Rhule says at this point...  and Donte is a guy he talked up and vouched for going into this season.  Donte played well early, but safety help or not, he looked bad the last two weeks in every type of scenario imaginable, and you could tell by some of the plays that safeties had nothing to do with it...  like one on one coverage in zero blitzes.  He just got exposed, and then despite being a captain, acted very immature while dealing with those struggles.

agreed. injury prone speedster had a good year in his contract year. let him walk.

I am also not sure how EVERY fan on this frickin board could clearly see he needed to be traded before the deadline but these "professionals" making millions to decide these things just let him stay and let what has happened happen.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
