REPORT: Panthers are not interested in Baker Mayfield

They already have quarterback Sam Darnold, the third pick in that same draft. Both players have guaranteed contracts of $18.8 million for 2022.

The Panthers desperately are seeking a franchise quarterback. Their lack of interest in Mayfield means they don’t believe he is one, or that he can become one.

Or maybe they’re just sick of kissing frogs in the hope that the become franchise quarterbacks. It’s an expensive — and so far fruitless — habit.

They’re having a hard time attracting an established franchise quarterback. And for good reason. Coach Matt Rhule enters 2023 on a hot seat, as evidenced by his inability to hire an offensive coordinator more accomplished or desirable than Ben McAdoo. Their best bet will be to draft a quarterback and hope he becomes a franchise quarterback, under either this regime or the inevitable next.

As I’ve said all along the Panthers balked at the asking price before the Browns even traded for Watson. They want a 1st LOL

Sure, sure we'll give you a first for your backup QB. The one that was your starter but you don't believe in him anymore and traded a kings ransom for a troublesome QB. A QB that may or may not play out his entire contract due to legal issues.

Sure, no problem.

We'll give you a backup and throw in a receiver for him plus a pick.

Didn't think so.

The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports the Panthers "don’t intend to pursue a trade for Browns QB Baker Mayfield at this time."

With Matt Ryan landing in Indianapolis and the Panthers reportedly not interested, Mayfield is nearly out of options. The Seahawks are the last logical spot for the former first-overall pick. Referring to Seattle, Howe added, "Mayfield has some advocates in the building." With no other buyers on the market, the Seahawks should be able to acquire Mayfield for an incredibly low price. Mayfield would be paired up with an elite receiving duo in Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf but his new coaching staff also trends toward the run to a fault. At this point, a starting gig is all Mayfield can ask for.
